Sex sells, but what?

Any TV-intensive weekend is obviously full of commercials. And of course, that translates into zillions of ads. I saw a nice commercial for "Sleepwell mattresses".
And then I realised... Almost everything is sold with the promise of sex. Be it cosmetics, deodorants, lingerie, clothes, shoes, alcohol, motorcycles, cars, even toothpaste. Buy "AXE" and no gal would be able to keep her hands off you. Buy "Synergie Garnier Body Cocoon" and all guys will fall at your feet, etc, etc.

But when it comes to mattresses, they are marketed as how good they are to sleep on! Imagine a mattress that was sold on sex! Mmmm.... I bet that would outsell all other mattresses put together!

Wake up guys!!! Exploit the idea before it gets stale!

With all of that sex happening everywhere else, people need to have a place to rest.

Have you never heard of Waterbeds?

very clever observations Animesh! Perhaps people value a reliably good night's sleep even more than sex. I sense an underlying connection betwen this post and its neighbor right below it

A kaballasitc connection - or a ballistic one, perhaps

"But there is no danger of being electrocuted"

OUCH! I think I'll take Margaret's suggestion instead...

Not to be too much of a smart ass here
but: You Are Now Just Noticing This?
I thought it was a given, well known fact
that Sex is used to sell everything from
Clothes to Alcohol to Food and beyond.

I recall that, during the 80s, subliminal advertising was being used quite widely. For example, a picture of a intricate vase had the word "SEX" carved into it. Don't know if that's still being done today.

Another perhaps more alarming report comes to mind: several years ago I read about the average number of ads that Americans view per day/month/year. Forget the figure, but it's staggering. We live our lives in a sea of marketing.

Saxton:
I'm not "just noticing" the fact that sex is the main focus of advertising, I'm only "just noticing" that it is not used to sell mattresses and beds, that's all.

Eric Berlin:
Same's with the rest of the world :)

Eric Olsen:
Really? I thought one was essential for the other :)
