The Redwalls at Cleveland's House Of Blues
Published February 17, 2005
Formerly a British Invasion cover act, The Redwalls have transcended the copycat scene and morphed into homage. Guitarists Andrew Langer and Logan Baren, along with bassist Justin Baren, traded off vocals over the course of the evening and the girls swooned for each of them. Their raspy, yet firmly capable voices and competent playing skills added to their old-soul personas and universal appeal. Their retrofitted 60s rock sound also makes them easily accessible to anyone who's familiar with The Beatles, The Stones, or the poppier Dylan sounds.
There didn't seem to be any nervousness on stage as they played through their set. It was clear, at times, that they weren't used to playing on a stage as large as the Cleveland House of Blues. They tended to huddle together, never more than a few feet from one another. This was forgivable, however, for the sheer energy they placed into the performance.
While their first and only single, "Thank You" features layered horn and string tracks throughout, in concert the production additives weren't missed. The Redwalls proved they were capable of carrying their own songs without the use of a backing tape or the cover ups of fancy lighting. Deft guitar playing alongside engaging vocal harmonies demanded the audience's attention, and it certainly was received.
In an industry where men as young as The Redwalls (their median age is 21) feel pressure to go pop in one manner or another, it's nice to see a group taking themselves seriously. They prove that sometimes you have to go backward in order to move forward. By learning from the best in their genre, The Redwalls have provided a refreshing sound in a scene that's been bogged down for years.
