Snubs for Canada's Juno Awards?

Now that the Grammy's are over with, we can now turn our eyes to Canada to find folks in an uproar over the Juno Awards ceremony.

In what is being called the "ultimate snub", Canadian music lovers are outraged by the news that hometown heroes Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings have not been invited to perform at this year's Juno Awards.

In an article in the Winnipeg Sun by TOM BRODBECK:

"Talk about a slap in the face. Winnipeg rock legend Randy Bachman spends the past couple of years lobbying to help get the Juno Awards to come to Winnipeg for the first time.

He's asked by Juno organizers to contact another Winnipeg rock legend, Neil Young, and convince him to perform at the televised event, scheduled for April 3 in Winnipeg.

Bachman travels to the U.S. and finds Young and gets him to agree.

And what does Bachman get from Hogtown Juno organizers for his enthusiasm and effort? A pig sticker in the eye.

Turns out there are no plans for Bachman to perform at the Junos.

He wants to. But they won't invite him."

The Winnipeg Sun goes on to speculate that Neil Young might boycott the Junos if Bachman is not invited to perform.

So the newspaper has started a petition drive ...

DEAR JUNO ORGANIZERS:
I'm insulted by your snub of Winnipeg music legends Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings and demand they be invited to perform at this year's awards ceremony.
Signed,

Does seem a bit odd. Neil young is actaully from Omemee, north east of Toronto. But I do believe at 16 he hopped on a train to the praries and started a few bands.

Sydney,
Yep, Neil packed up his bags and headed out to Winnipeg as he sings in "Don't Be Denied".

my question would be, why are they snubbing the Guess Who-sters? What is the purpose or the point?

They probably want to forget Canada's rocking heritage and go with the new "we're as bland as cream of wheat" image which they're promoting.

With Jet so popular now and sounding exactly like BTO you'd think that actually putting the real BTO on stage would have some pop appeal.

reading the linked article, there seems to be something of a Toronto-Winnipeg thing going on, somewhat like the Rock Hall NYC-Cleveland thing, where the overseeing organization is in NY and therefore the induction ceremonies are almost always held there rather than in "provincial" Cleveland where the Rock Hall actually resides.

But it STILL doesn't make any sense because both the Guess Who and BTO were huge international stars and are still among the best-known acts to ever come out of Canada

Eric - Definitely, this seems to be a Winnipeg-Toronto thing. Great analogy on Cleveland-NYC.

I think the Winnipeg'rs are quite proud of their musical progeny and are feeling mad that their 2 big hometown guys have gotten dissed.

The betting line among Neil Young fans is that if Bachman does not get invited that Neil will bail.

This is a big story north of the border and is far from over.

I'll try and post an update later.

Keep on Rockin!
