Gonzales gets a new title in the White House

In another change of power, Alberto Gonzales was confirmed by the Senate and made Attorney General. He replaces John Ashcroft, which is a good thing.

Of course, anybody else would be an improvement.

From what I can tell, he definitely has the background necessary to get the job done. After watching part of his speech to the staff, he also seems like a nice man.

Ashcroft, however, has not gotten out of the picture entirely. During President Bush's State of the Union Address, I noticed Ashcroft when the cameras panned the audience every so often.

Yes, Gonzales probably had a bit more attention paid to him when one considers that he sent a memo perhaps not condemning what happened in Abu Ghraib. Since I wasn't reading over his shoulder at the time, I cannot say with certainty what he wrote.

If one fact comes out of that scandal, it is this: soldiers who were not trained to serve as prison guards were put in exactly those positions. Yes, mistreatment probably existed. However, the conditions are also not your typical kind found in society.

It remains to be seen whether or not Gonzales will suceed in his new title. At least the Cabinet will have some fresh faces.

Gonzales is certainly competent enough for the position. And he's relatively moderate.

I suspect that the Left is just pissed off that they don't have Ashcroft to kick around anymore...

That was one of the most even sided things I've read on BC in a while.

Great to read someone willing to give this administration a chance to accomplish some good!

"soldiers who were not trained to serve as prison guards were put in exactly those positions"

What was Charles Graner's civilian job, again?

New title: "Terror Titan."

Shame on the US Congress.

The military police were put in charge, but it should have been military INTELLIGENCE. I refused to vote Bush in for time #2, but when half your staff resigns, doesn't that say something? The new faces will be a change of pace, which is good sometimes.

"a memo perhaps not condemning what happened in Abu Ghraib"?

Like Vlad the Impaler was "perhaps not a nice man."
