I think Tommy was spot on.

The vast majority of victims (160,000) were muslims from Indonesia. Muslims firmly believe that God is far above having a son and that Jesus was the second-last prophet.

"...Not every one who says to me, "Lord, Lord," will enter the kingdom of heaven; but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven."

Only the muslim obeys. The christians on the other hand have followed the whims of Paul.

Definition: <I>"...Deism is concerned with <B>those truths</B> which humans can discover through a process of reasoning..."</I>

For the curious, below is the list of those truths:

That would be similar to saying Jews and Muslims are Christians in their own way... the common theme being a belief in God.

Deism definition:

<i>Deism is belief in a God or first cause based on reason, rather than on faith or revelation, and thus a form of theism in opposition to fideism. Deism is usually synonymous with natural religion in 18th century Enlightenment writings. Deism originated in 17th century Europe, gaining popularity in the 18th century Enlightenment especially in America as a modernist movement inspired by the success of the scientific method. Deists emphasize the exclusive application of reason and personal experience to religious questions. Deism is concerned with those truths which humans can discover through a process of reasoning, independent of any claimed divine revelation through scripture or prophets. Most Deists believe that God does not interfere with the world or create miracles.</i>

"claims from a few of the members of Congress as to the Christian foundations of the US (although a majority of the Founding Fathers were Diests)"

Aren't Deists also Christians, in their own way?

You bet he knew exactly what he wanted to get across to his base... DeLay always speaks at these services, usually offering his interpretation of a passage as it relates to a Repub policy initiative. The fact that he didn't this time speaks volumes.

And, it was quite fitting as a prayer for the majority of the victims considering they are not Christians.

But the part that really got me is that he doesn't understand the irony of this passage:

<i>Many will say to me on that day, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?

"Then I will declare to them solemnly, 'I never knew you: depart from me, you evil doers.'"</i>

I've got to say it - the man is an asshole. He knows EXACTLY what he's saying and who his audience is. He doesn't seem to care about offending anyone.

Yes there are more radical things to be taken from the bible, but to say that he did not think about it is kinda silly. These people have only one tool set, words. Everything is planned from his hand grip to his tilt when he smiles... that's what they do. And maybe people wont say it too loud, but you know the first thought is that it is Gods wrath. I even saw newscaster the other night with his personal insight segment and how he wondered could GOD allow this to happen and why there (insert your religious leanings here). This not to say Non-christians don't say the same thing. When Kuwait was invade most muslims said it was good for them since they are a nation run by perverts and pimps. And I wil assure you that even with this event muslims in other parts of the world were scrutinizing how the muslims in Indonesia lived... well.. there you go and that is from a Muslim (Bektashi born in an Albanian village in what is today Macedonia and raised in Brooklyn, NY)

Certainly an odd choice, but although the quote seems bizarre given the context of the Tsunami disaster, it doesn't say we shouldn't give aid to the victims. What the quote says is relatively sensible and could be applied allegorically to a lot of other things besides the obvious weather associations.

Delay probably didn't even think of how some might interpret the quote in the context of the Tsunami. He's certainly not known for his sensitivity.

There are far loonier and more inhumane things in the Bible which he could have quoted instead.
