DVD Releases For Week Beginning 01-03-2005
Published January 06, 2005
Well, here it is folks, the first DVD release thingy for the year of 2005. You may have noticed that the world still hasn't been scorched and plundered by armies of terminators or no shit like that, which I find to be a crushingly disappointing development. Also, this first DVD schedule for 2005 is hardly worthy of such accolade. You would hope that maybe there was a signed Kirsten Dunst box-set, with maybe Kirsten as one of the special features, but no. You would hope there would maybe be a DVD that puts The Duke's thoughts on Woody Allen to a visual collage of some monkeys and so on fighting each other in the jungle.
What you get instead is this fairly paltry list right here, fairly nondescript, with these exception of these three picks;
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind - Widescreen Collectors Edition
This seems to be the same as the excellent region 2 number, but this has two discs, so surely something is added? Anyhow, I don't wanna give too much away, but when The Duke's Best Flicks Of 2004 list finally surfaces, chances are this here'll be in there, and I think I can say, without spoiling the surprise, that it could be higher than, say, No.2 on the list.
A beautiful, heart-breaking film, is what, and the Gondry / Kaufman commentary is brilliant. Also, Kirsten is fucking majestic.
Millennium - Complete Second Series
This here is the first of two picks that I haven't seen yet, but that intrigue me nonetheless. The episodes I did get a chance for to gander at, mind you, were wonderfully dark affairs. Touted as basically X-Files 2 by the marketing campaigns, Chris Carter's noir-ish, nightmarish follow-up to the show about two folks run around with torches, is a much more disturbing affair. Plus, it's got Lance Hendrickson, although, granted, Aliens Versus Predator had him too.
Troy
I ain't saw this yet, but it's been sitting here beside the computer for a couple weeks. Mediocre, seemed to be the general consensus regarding its worth, but what I need to do is reserve judgment. If you're a fan of the flick, though, this set has a bunch of featurettes and the like for to be getting on with. If only they'd fling the Special Edition tag in the direction of Peterson's earlier, masterful Das Boot.
Anyway, here's the full run-down. The Following Released On Tuesday 4th December
