Movie Awards Update - Sideways Continues to Show the Way
Published December 25, 2004
I missed this one: in November, the list of the twelve films from which five nominees will be chosen for Best Documentary Feature, were announced by AMPAS. It should not surprise anyone that Fahrenheit 9/11 isn't on the list, as Michael Moore previously noted he wouldn't allow it to be in contention for an Oscar. Also announced was the 2006 date for the Oscars, which will be moved back to March, so as to avoid conflict with the 2006 Winter Olympics.
The Golden Globe nominations, as well as the first few film critics' awards, were previously noted here.
Covered in the previous posts were:
- Golden Satellite nominations
- British Independent Film Awards
- American Film Institute Movies and TV Programs of the Year
- nominations for the 10th Annual Critics' Choice Awards
- awards from the following film critics circles or groups: New York, San Francisco, Boston, Washington DC Area, and Toronto.
The most complete tally of awards and nominations I have found resides on Rich Cline's Shadows on the Wall site. The Shadows Award Sweepstakes, as of December 14, 2004, featured tabulated results from 56 awards. In the lead as of that date, according to "Shadows' complex, highly secret scoring system":
- Picture: Sideways
- Director: Martin Scorsese (The Aviator)
- Screenplay: Alexander Payne, Jim Taylor (Sideways)
- Actress: Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake)
- Actor: Jamie Foxx (Ray, with an 80 point lead on Liam Neeson)
- Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett (The Aviator)
- Supporting Actor: Thomas Haden Church (Sideways)
- Ensemble: Closer
- Breakthrough: Jonathon Caouette (Tarnation) and Joshua Marston (Maria Full of Grace)
