Hype Surrounds HIV Status Of Erasure's Andy Bell
Published December 15, 2004
Yesterday Andy Bell of Erasure made a public statement confirming his status as HIV-positive. The statement was at least in part in response to swirling rumors and concerns on the Internet. Bell confirmed that he was diagnosed in 1998 when suffering from pneumonia. He also confirmed that his long-term partner Paul Hickey is HIV-positive as well.
Andy Bell is also taking the revelation as an opportunity to speak out and help educate young people about HIV and AIDS. He is taking combination drug therapy and says that he has rarely felt better in his life. The HIV status will have no effect on Erasure's plan to release their new album Nightbirds the end of January and tour in support beginning in February.
Erasure was formed by Andy Bell and former member of Depeche Mode and Yaz, Vince Clarke in the mid-1980's. They have consistently appeared on Pop and Dance charts since then recording such classics as "Chains Of Love," "Sometimes," and their remake of Abba's "Take a Chance On Me".

Erasure is second only to The Pet Shop Boys in terms of great British synth pop. I have every Erasure disc I can get my hands on. I hope he has Magic Johnson type success in battling this disease. If the Rutgers' finding from a few days ago show that this disease can be contained to a lareg degree. Godspeed, Andy.
