What a weird and strange story. In all of my years following every single detail of everything that has ever happened in rock, I have nothing to compare this to. What a bizarre and horrible horrible tradgedy. What the fuck is wrong with people that would cause someone to start shooting at entertainers. An insane, almost unbelievable tragedy. I feel terrible for everyone involved. The metal community (as well as the music commuinty) has lost an amazingly talented musician who enjoyed doing what he loved and made people happy through the music. Pantera got me through some pretty tough times and even now 10 years later I still pull out Far Beyond Driven (my personal favorite) as well as VDOP & the others and relax, get my aggression out and just remember what is was like to be younger and angry at the world. Pantera made me realize that it was okay to be pissed off and it gave me a positive outlet so I could be an adult when dealing with hard times. This loss is truly fucking shocking and horrible.

As someone who grew up listening to Pantera, I am shocked that something like this has happened. I had just seen damageplan in philly, not even two weeks ago, and was talking to Vinnie after the show. We tried to wait for Dime but he was taking so long. Didnt realize that it would be the last time we saw them. My thoughts and prayers are with Vinnie and the rest of the Abbott family, remember the legend that Dime leaves! I am truly saddened by this tragedy. I also spent my teenage years rocking out to Pantera and using their sound to drown out the angst of growing up around metal followers, or rejects as we were in my high school. I can still remember sitting outside their gig in New Britain, CT in like 1992, trying desperately to find tickets... never went to another show, never tried to check out their new projects... this tragedy has really put into perspective how short life is and how we just never know when our time is coming... RIP Dimebag.... long live the fans who will carry his memory in their hearts... I only wish we could all get closure.... thanks!

As an old guy guitar player (50 yrs old!) Darrel Abbot, in my opinion, was one of the few guys in modern metal that measured up to my heroes (Hendrix, Page etc.) He was a fabulous musician and obviously will be sorely missed. Unfortunately, being onstage all the time puts one in the position of being in danger from delusional nutjobs. I am so sorry for the whole family.

you know, i go to a lot of really rowdy punk rock and metal shows, and on more than one occasion i thought about how someone could easily get a gun into a club and either shoot people in the crowd or just point it up at the stage and take out the singer or whatever, cause most of the security at the door gives at best a cursory patdown (if at all) and if you have a bag or something they might look through it for a second. seems like just a matter of time before it actually happened. i wonder how this is going to change the concert industry, because now a lot of bands and singers are gonna be thinking about this when they get on stage in a small club, wondering if there is some psycho or stalker or whatever waiting to take them out. i wonder if they're gonna demand metal detectors at shows, or demand barricades that keep crowds from getting on the stage, or if they'll charge so much for insurance and protection that clubs won't be able to afford having the bands or the ticket prices will jump. i can guarantee that shit is gonna change tho.

I wish I cared about this, but I care enough to say, don't even try and blame Phil here. He mouthed off. If everyone who mouthed off resulted in a murder, well, land would be a heck of a lot cheaper and we wouldn't have poor people because there'd be enough for everyone.

I remember seeing Pantera and White Zombie in 92 in a three thousand seater. It was the best, most entertaining show I have ever seen. The whole crowd was one big living thing. Pantera was awesome. The show was entertaining and completely riveting. I am glad I was able to see them perform live, because as all of you know, to see them live was to know them. As good as their albums were, when they played live, they were IT. Its very sad, that a little speck of fly shit killed Darrell. But he died instantly with a guitar around his neck and a belly full of CR. He died doing what he loved. I am so sorry for Vinnie. To have to witness one's brother dying in such a horrific fashion. I hope he pulls through. He has a long road ahead of him. I just hope one day I will see him play live again. I hope that loser didn't kill Vinnie too.

Guys, from what I've read on www.pantera.com, the reason the guy killed Dime is because he thought Pantera stole his lyrics. The guy was in a band, and he became delusional and psycho and thought that Pantera was stealing his lyrics, when in reality he was stealing there's. This is from an interview with one of the people who played with him.

I am 15 years old and I am still a huge Pantera fan. I woke up Thursday morning and the news was on, and I heard that four people were killed at a Damageplan concert. That was horrible, but I didnt think much about it. When I got out of the shower I saw the news showing a bunch of clips of Dime in the Pantera days. As I watched it came clear to me what had happened. I dropped to me knees and cried. The Jesus Christ of heavy metal was dead. He was my hero. I remember going to school that day depressed because I realized Pantera would never get back together and I would never get to see Dime perform live. I didnt say much that day and my eyes teared up a few times. A lot of kids that are all into rap and that bubble gum bullshit gave me crap about it all day, but i was too upset to fight. I should have, and if I could turn back time I would have cracked some fuckin skulls that day. God damn Dime shouldnt have died, not like that at least and not so soon. I had a bunch of cut out magazine pictures of Dime and the rest of my heavy metal heroes on my wall. I guess you can say they make me feel good and I think of how I could be like them one day. It sucks. And by the way, I dont blame Phil Anselmo for any of this. Now I know he and Dime had some problems,but shit, I respect Phil a great deal too. He was a great song writer and a legendary frontman. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to see he is upset by Dimes death. So my heart goes out to all surviving members of Damageplan AND Pantera, and also to their families. R.I.P Dimebag. You were a hero to me aswell as others.

As a guitarist myself, I think that live rock as we have known it will become a rarity for a number of reasons:
No muso wants to worry about being shot while they are trying to be creative.
Venue operators will face huge costs associated with insurance, legal costs, and just policing venues with metal detectors,body searches etc........ Nervous fans will never relax again for the soul has now gone out of the whole 'Live Gig' thing.
We will have 'Copycat Murders' by anyone wishing for instant notorioty,
even it results in them dieing.
Already I see blaming words printed on this page that could result in more violence to muso's.They probally see themselves as avenging angels.This is really dangerous so please don't!!
And remember it was Pantera themselves who asked for slackening of security at their nineties gigs(see videos) .This ironically did'nt help in protecting themselves from that 'Loose Screw' in the audience.
I'd like to add that no one has commented on Dime Bags playing style to any depth...well I'll say this:
The Tone Darrell got from his Randall amps was surprising for transistor amps that most muso's rejected in favour of valve Marshall's.
It was brutal but intelligent playing.
He utilised his own combination of guitar amp / guitar to achieve a unique sound.
There were recordings made in Nashville on gear designed for Country and Western
recordings and were consequently of impeccable quality.
This (in my experience)is due to the fact that recording acoustic intruments (common in Nashville) requires good mic's,gates, eq's and dynamic range.
Lets not forget Vinnie and Darrell were brothers and complimented each other's styles.Darrell introduced rythmic atonality which no one else had thought of, and Vinnies heavily 'Gated' drums were like punctuation marks.The two brothers created the new sound that so many now imitate.
Darrells playing was thoughtful,powerful and unique.
Some of those tracks from 'New Found Power' show his style to be developing from the Pantera style into something that at times is more subtle yet even more emotive.I hear guitar harmony's which demonstrate his ever progessing style.We all love Pantera yet muso's, in order to grow, often play with many other bands/muso's (beside the one/s that made their names commonplace).
None of us should resent band break ups.
Touring is hard, and often causes members to get on each other's nerves.
Phil is still real angry at the world, which for him, as a frontman is desirable( I could'nt stay angry like him though,too tireing and stressful).I think Darrell was quite the opposite, a fun loving, kind person who unfortunately got caught up in the band lifestyle to such a degree that it killed him.OK granted he was murdered.
But we fans demand so much of those we idolise that we too are indirectly responsible by placing huge demands on musos that are touring endlessly in order to please us.
Hendrix was another casualty,(and the list goes on)and the people killed him too, not directly but by the demands they made on him.
Darrell has made a huge contribution to rock guitar, and he was just a man like all of us.
When you taste of fame you tend to forget you're mortal and think you are like a god and cannot die,especially when your audience treats you that way Sadly we all do.
At least he accomplished a lot, and I hope we remember him by his music and not because of this bizzare and horrific event.

Dime was an artist, If anyone should understand this it would be another artist! (Phil) With that being said, no one forced anyone in Pantera to stay in Pantera or any other job fo that matter. Its a matter of choice. Phil obviosly still has pent up feeling and resentment tword Dime. That is his cross to bear. Phil....You should be ashamed of yourself, I was at Ozzfest......Your band was NOT Clean. I was there I met you and the rest of Superjoint. You set was rough at best. I have been to hundreds of show locally and abroad. I must say that the truth will seyt you free.....you just have to come clean. If making statements of fact or opionion one should be true to themselves. I ultimately dont know if Phil is telling the truth. I will however say I believe he is lying. I also believe he is bitter over Pantera's breakup due to its formitable success. I'm really sad because of this tragedy. Dimebag and his guitarplaying in Pantera helped me through very difficult times when I was a teenager. Now an unstable young girl has become a stable adult, who can deal with her anger no matter what. Thank u Dimebag and rest in peace.

Dime will be missed by all. Phil, if you read these, please make a statement to remind the crowd that no matter what BS goes on, the brotherhood is forever. We do not want to teach these young kids that we hold grudges. Be you right or he, it is time to put it all aside for the sake of what is right.

Phil Anselmo said some horrible things, but that is his job as a frontman. he has always said, done and written nasty things, and we all loved Pantera because they were open about how they felt.

People need to stop blaming him or implicating that his words in the MetalHammer interview (or anywhere else) were somehow responsible for the death of Dimebag.

The entire concept that somebody's words can directly incite somebody to commit violent acts is exactly the same kind of tactic that a lot of the far right wing types use when they try to clamp down on metal and hardcore and every other subculture that doesn't conform to their idea of a good society. So if we start blaming or implying that Phil's words may have been the reason or the motivation for this moron killing Dime, we are giving credence to the same ridiculous logic that is used against a lot of music out there.

The bottom line is this guy was insane. He may have read what Phil said, but that didn't change the fact that he was nuts from the begining. You can't blame Phil for his actions, just like you can't blame Judas Priest for a depressed kid killing himself or blame Christianity because some religious nutjob blew up an abortion clinic or a gay bar.

In the end, it's all the same bullshit. So if Phil said some things that may have made him sound like an asshole, then that is the worse thing that he did. Period.

Interesting that everyone has their own opinion about Phil Anselmo and what the media decides to print and not print. There is probably a lot more to the story than what he said. They probably chopped up the copy to make the guy look like he had it in for his bandmates. No one really knows unless they either talk to him about it, or get the whole story. I am not defending anyone because it is a tragedy that happened to Dime. Plain and simple. That guy was one of the best guitarists around period.

All I am saying is, no one should jump to conclusions. It takes a lot for band members or even people to get along being around each other for that long.

Reading reactions from some of the above, it makes me think that any one of them could have picked up a gun and did the same thing.

Well I think the most sensible thing Phil has done in a long time is taking some time out of the public eye.

Can't you see how horrible this has become not only have we lost Damgeplan & Pantera but we have lost SJR and Down as well. The crowd then surfed this guy up...wheelchair and all..the lenght of the arena..to the stage next to the band. Phil gave the guy a beer hugged him and said "best motherfuckin seats in the house my freind" The guy got to watch the concert from the stage while Pantera belted out more metal. As far as the GWAR bullshit they have always been a walking media stunt since day one.... i mean come on..people..think about how many times have they been on Jerry Springer..They use to call their style of Metal...Joke Metal.. cause nobody takes it seriouslly..I lIke GWAR but i'll take Down over them anyday.Dime is gone R.I.P and we will probably never hear from Phil again. I remember the last time I saw Pantera in live was at Ozzfest a few years ago. I was amazed by Phil's arrogance. It was almost as if he believed that we were all there to see just him. He basically gave the impression that we could all...pleasure his member lets say. Ever since then, I have thought of him as a selfish prick. However, no one is paying more for his arrogance now than him. A spat between friends amounted to their parting words. Phil's ego was wounded by Dime's comments and he retaliated with a bunch of violent blubber. His unwavering self absorbtion has always been an issue. He has never been afraid to deny fans the full concert that they paid for because of his own selfish indulgences. However, everyone makes mistakes. You can't really blame him for having a large ego when he is always being told how great he is. Some people have the strength of character to handle their own fame, like Dime. Obviously, Phil doesn't.

Another reminder we should be careful what we say to one another and about one another.

It's morbid and dramatic, but there have been times after I have had a fight with my wife that did not get resolved right away where I have considered: what if these turned out to be the last words we said to one another. And it drives the point home to me. Most of the things we get riled up about don't amount to shit. It's too bad it takes tragedies to remind us of that.

That's exactly what I mean. Don't get me wrong. I am not only a Pantera fan, I love SuperJoint, Down and Damage Plan. I thoroughly respect Phil as an artist and I am greatful that I was lucky enough to be able to hear one of the greatest bands of all time in concert a few times. I do believe that Dime would want us to give Phil a break. Over the course of time you just make certain observations about those you admire. Sometimes you are disappointed by what you see. Sometimes you are misled by the media to favor one individual or another. Sometimes you are misinformed by your own outside observations. Sometimes you are just plain wrong. The fact is, this is really none of any of our business. But if it makes us feel a little better to get things off our chests and see how others view things, then we are all better off for it.
