Dimebag Darrell dead

Dimebag Darrell was killed while on stage with his band Damageplan last night in Ohio:

A gunman's attack on a Texas-based heavy metal band during an Ohio concert left at least five people dead, prompting stunned fans around the country to check in at the group's Web site early Thursday.

The attack on the band Damageplan began as the musicians started playing their first song Wednesday night. A witness said the gunman first targeted guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, shooting him multiple times at point-blank range at the crowded Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio.

The gunman killed at least four people and wounded at least two others before police fatally shot him. Authorities have not released the victims' names.

Dozens of messages were posted to the Dallas band's Web site after the shootings.

"This is the worst day in metal history," one posting read.

"The metal world feels your pain," another wrote.

Abbott and his brother, Vinnie Paul Abbott, formed Damageplan in 2003. The band was in the midst of a national tour, having performed at Fort Worth's Ridglea Theater on Nov. 4. The musicians were headlining the Ohio show, which included two other groups. They were also scheduled to perform Thursday in Flint, Mich.

...The Abbott brothers produced Damageplan's debut album, New Found Power, which was released in February. Other band members are vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bob Zilla.

Vinnie Abbott was a former drummer in Damageplan's predecessor, PANTERA. A key band in 1990s heavy metal, Pantera was nominated several times for Grammy Awards. A song by the band became the Dallas Stars hockey team's signature tune in 1999.

"Damageplan carries on the tradition Pantera started, the ... hell-raising tradition we were all about," Vinnie Paul Abbott told The Dallas Morning News in October. "We do play some Pantera songs. Me and Dime wrote them, and we feel like we have the right to play them. But the focus is on Damageplan.

"It took a while for some of the Pantera fans to accept it; we knew that was gonna be the case," he said. "Change is something that people have a hard time accepting. But me and Dime intended on doing this our whole lives."

The Pantera website is reporting that two band members (including DD) died in the shooting. They also have all the reports on the event from various sources, click on news.

This is a sad day in metal and one that will take a long time to recover from. I am sure I would not be going out on a limb by expressing BC's condolences to the familes of all those who died.

*News on the police officer who shot the shooter, Gale:

The gunman had a hostage in a headlock and seemed to be preparing to kill him when the officer, James D. Niggemeyer, managed to shoot without injuring the hostage, police said.

Typo in my trackback - I'm evidently affected - it should be Darrell Abbott, not Vinnie Abbott. Personally, I was more a Pantera fan than Damageplan.

#2 — December 9, 2004 @ 08:44AM — Eric Olsen

thanks Marty, incredibly awful - both the Pantera and Damageplan sites seem to be down right now, overwhelmed no doubt

Yes, no matter what you thought of either band, this is a terrible event. I was a great gig last night (review to follow) but my enjoyment has been a wee bit tainted by this tragic news. Whether a musician or a fan this is a very sad day for heavy metaldom.

#4 — December 9, 2004 @ 08:47AM — Aaman [URL]

Don Imus is playing Pantera right now on his show - he also notes that the gunman apparently had 'issues' with the guitarist

#5 — December 9, 2004 @ 08:48AM — Aaman [URL]

Andrew - were you at the venue?

#6 — December 9, 2004 @ 08:49AM — Andrew Ian Dodge [URL]

No, I was at the DSF/Girlschool gig at the Garage in London.

#7 — December 9, 2004 @ 09:01AM — bhw [URL]

This happened in Ohio, where I believe carrying a concealed weapon was recently made legal.

Great law.

The Columbus NBC affiliate seems to be keeping up with the latest news here:

The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m. at Alrosa Villa, located at 5055 Sinclair Rd.

A crowd of about 250 people was inside for a concert by Damageplan, a heavy metal band. Two former members of the band Pantera formed the group.

The band took the stage shortly after 10 p.m., and minutes later, a man, who was wearing a hockey jersey and hooded sweatshirt, began firing at point-blank range at least four times at guitarist Dimebag Darrell, NBC 4's Kyle Anderson reported.

Darrell Abbott, who was known as "Dimebag Darrell," was pronounced dead at the scene, NBC 4's Kyle Anderson reported. Police released the names of two others who died. They were Nathan Bray and Erin Halk, both audience members.

"(The gunman) came on stage, from the back, like he knew what he was doing and went straight to Dimebag Darrell immediately," an unidentified witness said."

The alleged gunman reportedly shot and killed another member of the band before firing shots into the crowd.

Columbus police were flooded with 911 calls from concertgoers right after the shooting. Some witnesses said the alleged gunman took someone hostage. Minutes later, a Columbus police officer entered the nightclub and shot and killed the man, Anderson reported.

BHW, making a political point before rigor mortis has set in...classy mate, classy.

#11 — December 9, 2004 @ 09:24AM — bhw [URL]

Sorry, Marty, I don't let other people dictate when I can make my comments.

#12 — December 9, 2004 @ 09:25AM — rick

i submitted the story to ohioans for concealed carry. you can too here.

#13 — December 9, 2004 @ 09:34AM — Andrew Ian Dodge [URL]

Fair enough BHP.

But I am guessing the off-duty cop had a concealed weapon permit as well. He is the hero who took out this arsehole before he could any more people.

#14 — December 9, 2004 @ 09:38AM — Eric Olsen

I'm not sure if the officer was off-duty or not

#15 — December 9, 2004 @ 09:39AM — Andrew Ian Dodge [URL]

That is what Fox is reporting. They have the name of the guy now but no idea of motive.

#16 — December 9, 2004 @ 09:46AM — bhw [URL]

From what I read earlier this morning, the cop really did do an outstanding job.

#17 — December 9, 2004 @ 10:20AM — JR

The cop would have been carrying his gun even without the new concealed carry law; I'm sure he gets some kind of exemption. And the shooter would have been carrying anyway, because he was already planning to break the law. So the new law made no difference.

However, concealed carry laws do seem to promote guns as a valid tool for conflict resolution.

#18 — December 9, 2004 @ 10:25AM — Temple Stark [URL]

Is it kind of weird that I deleted "This Love" from my iTunes playlist yesterday morning? Why, yes it is.

I read somewhere else about this and wasn't 100 percent sure that it was the Pantera guy. The Reuters story I saw didn't mention Pantera.

So I came here to see if there was anything. If not, I was going to post. But there was and it answered my question.

Ohio seems to be the place for high-profile mass shootings.

#19 — December 9, 2004 @ 10:38AM — D.B.Cooper

This happened in Ohio, where I believe carrying a concealed weapon was recently made legal. Great law.

This crime had NOTHING to do with that law. I am going to take a wild guess (though I know I am right), and say the shooter Nathan Gale had no such permit. Blaming this crime on concealed weapon laws in Ohio is blaming the state rather than Gale, a demented fuck with a damn death wish.....

#20 — December 9, 2004 @ 10:43AM — Craig Lyndall [URL]

Ohio seems to be the place for high-profile mass shootings.

Was that a callback to Kent State or something?

Also, I don't like the conceal and carry law just because I don't really do the gun thing anyway, but this crime was going to be committed regardless of some conceal and carry law. As I stated on my site, I want to know why this happened. I have been getting frisked at the doors of shows for a long time now and while that certainly isn't foolproof, they should be able to come up with a concealed weapon at the door check.

#21 — December 9, 2004 @ 11:07AM — Dawn

How horribly sad.

What JR and Craig said about the law and the crime going to be committed anyway is correct. Guns are pointless tools of destruction in the hands of anyone but law enforcement officials, but of course, that's because I believe that cops don't go around looking for excuses to kill people.

Thank goodness this police officer acted bravely and responded quickly.

I for one am glad the shooter is DEAD -that's one less useless asshole.

#22 — December 9, 2004 @ 11:55AM — Aaman [URL]

This moron apparently shot Dimebag because they broke up Pantera - and 'cause Phil did not join DamagePlan.

Also from the same post -

"There's some blood on my ticket stub, so I'm going to sell it on eBay or keep it or something. I know DBD is in heaven (or ripping some mad riffs in hell)."

Apparently another band member has also been killed

#23 — December 9, 2004 @ 12:05PM — Aaman [URL]

I just realized - December 8 was also John Lennon's death anniversary 24 years ago.

#24 — December 9, 2004 @ 12:12PM — Andrew Ian Dodge [URL]

Yes, ironic innit?

#25 — December 9, 2004 @ 12:19PM — Eric Olsen

though still not officially stated anywhere, it appears the other band member killed was the singer, Patrick Lachman

#26 — December 9, 2004 @ 12:20PM — Aaman [URL]

Dec 8 is also traditionally the date of Gautama Buddha's enlightenment

#27 — December 9, 2004 @ 12:30PM — Eric Olsen

that is cosmically peculiar indeed

#28 — December 9, 2004 @ 12:35PM — Craig Lyndall [URL]

It seems that there was a lot of talk about Pantera being done. Saying fans should "get over it."

In terms of what I have read so far, it said that Darrel was killed, two audience members were killed and the gunman made number four. I keep hearing that another band member was killed, but I figured that report was erroneous.

#29 — December 9, 2004 @ 12:36PM — Craig Lyndall [URL]

Oh and Lachman was a guitarist for Halford before being the singer for Damageplan.

#30 — December 9, 2004 @ 12:39PM — Eric Olsen

apparently they haven't announced Lachman because they haven't informed the family yet

#31 — December 9, 2004 @ 13:02PM — Temple A. Stark [URL]

Kent State and at least one other which completely slipped my mind when I started typing - and hasn't come back, yet.

What do Blogcritics readers contributors think about the man? Was he a good guy, good player. What?

Googling "Ohio shootings" I come up with what I was looking for primarily - the string of highway shootings earlier this year. and yes, Kent State.

#32 — December 9, 2004 @ 13:05PM — Eric Olsen

maybe they're referring to the Columbus freeway shootings

#33 — December 9, 2004 @ 13:11PM — Craig Lyndall [URL]

He was a staple in all those metal magazines and also in the guitar magazines. I was never the hugest Pantera fan, but there are huge amounts.

Actually that was one of the first things that caught my attention about this story this morning. 2 members of Pantera form a band that used to play amphitheaters and sometimes arenas and stuff like that, and they were playing a club that held well under 1000 people?

Kind of surprising really.

#34 — December 9, 2004 @ 13:44PM — Mark Saleski [URL]

i only own a couple of Pantera cds, one being some live thing and the other i think is Cowboys From Hell.

clearly the guy could play. i have no idea whether he was 'better' than other players or not, because i don't usually make comparisons like that.

the only bright spot (if you can call it that) in this sad, sad story is that i get a giggle out of seeing the word 'Dimebag' posted on fox news.

#35 — December 9, 2004 @ 13:58PM — Craig Lyndall [URL]

The only funny thing about this today?

Someone just came up to me and asked me if something happened to Lou Diamond Phillips.

Dimebag... Diamond... blech.

#36 — December 9, 2004 @ 13:59PM — Aaman [URL]

Great updates to the original post. Any reason why they are holding back the name of the fifth victim officially?

#37 — December 9, 2004 @ 14:03PM — Aaman [URL]

He used to be known as Diamond Darrell long ago - when he was with Pantera - at least a few CDs credit him thus - e.g. Riffer Madness/Guitar World

#38 — December 9, 2004 @ 14:17PM — Tim Hall [URL]

I'm reminded of the two obsessed Judas Priest fans who entered that ridiculous 'backward masking' suicide pact a decade ago.

It's only a matter of time before the fundies get hold of this and start screeching 'Metal is eeeevil'.

While most heavy metal fans are sane and balanced people, it does seem to attract a small minority of seriously fucked-up people. I'm not sure what, if anything, the metal community can do about this.

#39 — December 9, 2004 @ 14:42PM — Craig Lyndall [URL]

The best defense is a good offense, but killing people isn't an option for those of us who are sane. Kind of funny how that works.

#40 — December 9, 2004 @ 14:44PM — ghettobird

Why the hell was this guy "gunman" not searched? why no metal detectors? And of course it was a white guy, geez. Sure if it was a rap concert then there would be searches and metal detectors. Why does this OHIO state need a concealed weapons law? Why support yahoo's like this carrying guns concealed, if you have nothing to hide why would anyone vote to have concealed weapons? Keep supporting right to conceal weapons and this is one of the many outcomes. "R.I.P. D.D."

oH YeAh, FUCK SUPERJOINT whoever, those guys are RACIST, SATANIST, WAR MONGERS, there music is so played, its burn-out, SPINAL TAP is better.

#41 — December 9, 2004 @ 15:02PM — JR

Were the Beatles heavy metal? 'Cause they attracted both Mark Chapman and Charles Manson.

While I wasn't a fan and don't have anything by Dimebag Darrell, I find this about the most horrifying story I've heard all year. From what I can see, this could have happened to anyone who just loves music and wants to play for people. There is no simple categorization to explain this away. It sucks and it just makes no kinda sense.

Ghettobird, What in the f**k does race
have to do with the fact that this guy
was definitely un-hinged and chose this
place in time to go nuts?

A friend of mine is a bouncer at the House Of Blues in Las Vegas and he told
me in a conversation this morning about
this incident that he has found more weaponry on people at Country & Western
shows than he ever has at Hip-Hop shows.

Anyway,I don't like Heavy Metal music
but as a human being would've been just
as sickened no matter who was murdered.

#43 — December 9, 2004 @ 15:42PM — Tim Hall [URL]

Metal does seen to have more of a problem with a lunatic fringe than some other forms of music. I'm thinking of those Norwegian church-burners. But you're right that violent deaths and psychotic 'fans' aren't unique to any one genre of music.

#44 — December 9, 2004 @ 15:48PM — toadmaster [URL]

I was going to blog about this incident over here, but I see Marty's done a fine job already. I just blogged it at my own site.

Interesting comments also.

Dimebag and I were on "nodding" terms in Texas, when I lived there. I'd see him and have a beer with him about once or twice a year at the Kings X show. He was as big a fan as I was in those days of that band.

This is a sad loss to us all.

Some info on Nathan Gale for you.

Some people who knew Nathan "Nate" Gale said Thursday that the heavy metal music fan had a quick temper.

    Nathan Gale

Gale, 25, was the man who police said shot and killed four people inside the Alrosa Village nightclub Wednesday night.

A Columbus police officer who was called to the scene shot and killed Gale as he was holding a hostage, authorities said.

Gale was a 1998 Marysville High School graduate and lived in an apartment in downtown Marysville, NBC 4's Holly Hollingsworth reported.

He served in the United States Marine Corps from February 2002 through November 2003, but did not serve his full term, Hollingsworth reported. The USMC would not give the circumstances of his discharge, Hollingsworth reported.

While some in the community said Gale had a quick temper, others said he was a good-natured person.

Mikayla Weitzenecker, who works at Maggie's Restaurant in Marysville, said Gale was in the restaurant this week and said he loved children.

"He always played with the little ones when he was in here," Weitzenecker said. "He was just a real gentle guy. He seemed like a big old teddy bear to me. I never would have thought what made him do that."

thanks Craig, good info

How much you wanna bet he was discharged for "health reasons," a.k.a., mental health?

First off, this is incredibly sad. Just awful.

bhw- If the concealed carry law passed, I'm sure its' relationship to this tragic crime was purely coincidental. This is the act of a nutjob, who aren't exactly the types who think, "Gosh- there is a law against concealed carry. I guess that thwarts this evenings plans for a senseless murderous rampage. I certainly wouldn't want to be breaking the law!"

#49 — December 9, 2004 @ 19:36PM — Mike Kole [URL]

This statement was issued by Ohioans for Concealed Carry

"Ohioans For Concealed Carry Statement:
This incident reinforces the fact that disarmament zones only disarm honest, law-abiding citizens; not the criminals who prey upon them.

This mass killer broke scores of firearms, liquor and criminal laws in committing this rampage. These same laws did nothing to protect the law-abiding citizens at this event.

Under current Ohio law, bearing handguns for self-defense in establishments which serve drinks under a Class D liquor license is illegal, even for employees. In fact, Ohio's law would prevent SECURITY at this nightclub from carrying a handgun, even if the club owner had wanted them to do so.

When the Ohio House or Representatives passed Sub. House Bill 12 in 2003, specific exemptions were contained to allow bar owners to protect themselves and their patrons. This provision was stripped from the final bill by the state Senate.

Many other states allow concealed handgun license-holders to enter into liquor establishments, and even to consume alcohol, so long as they do not drink to the point of impairment.

Ohio's complete ban on self-defense in liquor establishments has proven time and again to be a complete failure. It is time for Ohio to join the other state's who have recognized there is nothing to fear from law-abiding citizens who choose to defend themselves."

I think the shock of the whole thing is really going to sink in this weekend as people realise actually what went down. I am still trying to find out who the fifth person to die is. I expect more news to come out today.

#51 — December 10, 2004 @ 11:54AM — ED

i think that the killing of dimebag was an uprooting of metal music in all of its GLORY. HE WAS ON HIS WAY TO BEING A VERITABLE METAL GOD, AND SOME SHMUCK COMES ALONG AND KILLS THE MAN? what type of societal dumbass thinks he's going to get away with shooting a gun off in a club anyway? i feel a piece of metal is gone...forever.

I was at the American Apathy tour last night in Rockford, il. Twisted Method and Dope were headlining. All of the bands that did play, did a song in tribute to "dimebag". It just shows me that no matter what background you have, we're all not that different. We all are affected by one person. Our harts and thoughts go to "dimebag", his family, friends and the fans! Give peace a chance!

#61 — December 11, 2004 @ 04:00AM — Lono [URL]

Well, they now know WHY the dude did it. He was convinced that Pantera had stolen his lyrics. He wanted to sue the band but instead this somehow occured. He confided this in a friend or two recently, and it just came to light today I believe.

but here is my question. I have been to a few hundred rocks shows, from bars to stadiums, and everyone of them has had several HUGE meatheads doing security in front of the stage. Obviously a gun is going to beat a meathead, but I have not heard anything about 'tussles with security guards right before the shooting".

Though I never listened to Pantera, as I guitarist I was aware of Dimebag. What an absolutely bizarre and unsettling incident.

#62 — December 11, 2004 @ 07:14AM — chaz wren [URL]

NATHAN GALE, A WORTHLESS, SOUL DESTROYING, MURDEROUS, FUCKING COWARD. ABSOLUTE FUCKING MAGGIT!!!

A man with confidence in himself is a man who is not afraid to steer clear of violence, a real man is someone who is confident enough in his own beliefs to not need the aid of a weapon to prove his point, a real man is someone who faces the truth, a real man is not Nathan Gale.

Dimebag, you are the fucking man, I fucking love you!! we all do. You will forever stay in our hearts, and we will forever party til the end.

Rock on, party on, fuck any maggits that get in the way.

#63 — December 11, 2004 @ 13:56PM — jbass210

This fuckin sucks! We are all feeling this atomic bomb of bad news. The greats all die young:RHOADS SRV and now DIME. That's scary for all musicians to think that they may have to be watchful while on stage while some some faggots are plannong on something stupid that will ultimately ruin the rush of playing their hearts out for all that care to hear it Vinnie, Phil, Rex the remaining members of DP and the friends, family and the fans(including myself) I hope that you all can find the strenth to come through this and keep going so that GREAT guys Like Darrel can and will be remembered. TO THE BASTARD that did this, was it really worth it to destroy so many people's lives for your own sadistic head trip? I also hope that DIME is beating you senseless for the rest of time. DIME WE'LL MISS YOU. REST IN PEACE, BROTHER.

#64 — December 12, 2004 @ 01:17AM — theunlord666

all im waiting for is reactions from phil,i cant find anything on that.im a true pantera fan, which means dimebag, phil, rex and vinnie.im totally for superjoint,i hate pantera broke up,but what fuck,,dime didnt deserve to go out like this.rip dimbag, forever your riffs will rock the heads of all the pantera fans.i never did like damage plan but vinnie and dime were and still are my favorite drummers and guitarist,,hands down,,whether pantera or not.they all had plenty of bad ass albums full of kick ass songs under thier belt, and accomplished the pure meaning of heavymetal,,most wannabe heavy metal bands could never accomplish, from the past through the beyond!!!

Look here for one statement purportedly from Phil

#66 — December 12, 2004 @ 02:57AM — Rob J. Harpe

Darrel Vincent Abbot did not deserve to die he was an ongoing metalist who changed the lives of fans because of his insane guitar rifs, this is truely a tragedy but there is nothing we can do now... dimebag is gone i dont care if they get a new guitarist Pantera, Damageplan, it will never be the same to me, I knew dimebag personaly and i really just want him to know even though he allready knows this shit that he has changed the world permanently and their music will be forever heard, coverd, and loved.

P.s. ill be there soon enough dime ;)

#67 — December 12, 2004 @ 15:58PM — theunlord666

well i Aaman i read that statement thing, and if im correct wasnt exactly phils reaction to the whole thing, but take it you know him,i guess it help me understand a little bit on how phil is feeling.im a real big phil fan,hes one of my all time fav in heavy metal, tis the reason why im wanting to hear what he really has to say.thanks for that, and if you gett any more info on phil, pleas keep us updated..and i have to say that is a touching fuckin pic of phil and dime,ya know it really hasnt sunk it yet exactly what just happend, but i know one day soon its gonna hit sooo hard,im afraid to experience the heart felt i may endure,,im just trying to be strong....fuckin dime,i miss you,we all miss you...rip

#68 — December 12, 2004 @ 16:24PM — Aaman [URL]

As one can make out from any Pantera concert DVD or song, Dime and Phil had phenomenal chemistry and the songs hold together awesomely.

Any pair of friends fights from time to time and sometimes these fights can last for a real long time for petty reasons. You can say some real shit in those times - ask me. That does not mean they would not have made up.

Phil feels terrible, I'm sure, as does anyone - the death of one lessens us all.

Keep on Rocking!

right on Aamon,i hear that, and as you may aswell rock on....the hallow plays all the time now on my stereo!!!!

The news of "DIME's" death sadened me deeply. To know that the some selfish dick had to go and take someone that meant so much to so many people. I was fortunate enough to have meet Darrell and Vinnie in 1997 in KC,MO. It is something that I will never forget. I can't remember ever meeting anybody as fucking cool as "DIME".My thoughts and prayers are with Vinnie and the entire Abbott family. I will see again my friend. You are greatly missed and until that day I will keep jammin Pantera and Damageplan, thanking god that he gave us someone like you. Rest in Peace DIME

Dime, I never got the chance to see you tear it up in person, but listening to you shred pushed me to become a better drummer. I'll slam a blacktooth in your honor. Rest in peace bro, and hopefully we'll meet on the other side of the clearing.

To hear Dimebag was dead was such a shock. He summed up what it meant to be a metal guitarist. He was a god. Thanks for the music, we will never forget you.

I was really inspired by dimebag's style of guitar playin'. I listen to Pantera every fuckin' day and I am really saddened by the news of DIMEBAG's death. Heavy metal will never be the same without him. SEE you there dime....wherever you are! you will forever be in our hearts.

Dimebag Darrell, the guy that did it all then said fuck it and did it again. In the magazine "Metal Hammer" a few months ago I remember reading something about how he was drunk for 3 days around the time of the Golden God Awards. This crazy mother fucker could shred both on the fucking stage and off it. I'm not one to believe in heaven, hell, or any religion, but if any of that crap is true, I am happy in the knowledge that all the metal fans including Dimebag will be giving Nathan the beating of a lifetime down there.

And lastly a simple solution to the debate of whether concealed weapons should be allowed: how about no guns legal at all amoung the public and solve the problem all together? You don't hear about shootings in the rest of the first world countries...

Slayerfan, that is because you aren't listening mate. A innocent bystander was shot outside the MOBO awards here in London, when two rap group's posses started shooting at each other. A member of the hip-hop group So Solid Crew is being charged with a shooting murder...

BUENO UN GRAN IMPACTO EN MI VIDA, LA MUERTE DE MI GRAN IDOLO. NO TENGO PALABRAS SOLO TENGO LA PENA QUE ESTO ME PRODUCE Y ES ALGO MUY GRANDE Y ALTO Y X TODOS LADOS QUE VOY PIENSO Y NO ME LO PUEDO SACAR DE LA MENTE EL ECHO QUE MATARAN A DIMEBAG COMO PORQUE
:(

#81 — December 15, 2004 @ 03:03AM — SlayerFan

Andrew: yeah sorry mate i know it occurs in the rest of the world, however it is far less frequent and a lot harder to pull off. Anyway, my comment wasn't intended to provoke an argument, it was there to end the one about the "concealed and carry" one or whatever. There is no point arguing over someone that has died: it happened for whatever reasons, we can't help that. Arguing amoung ourselves does nothing though. So this is a request for no more aggression towards each other (don't get me wrong, i'm not greenpeace hippy or summin here) in this post and let it be about Dimebag, not our personal political views.
Once again RIP Dime.

As a guitarist, I feel a truly deep sense of loss, and wonder why this had to happen to someone so great. The only thing I can come up with is handgun manufacturers and their b#@ch, the NRA.

Folks, call your representive in Congress NOW!!! Tell them how this makes you feel, and where your vote will be next election if they don't do something about it.

Don't let Dimebag's death go in vain!

#83 — December 20, 2004 @ 12:01PM — Andrew Ian Dodge [URL]

Like he could not have gotten an illegal gun anyway? You do realise that this guy violated a whole raft of laws when he did this?

Tighter guns laws would not have prevented this tragedy...suggesting as much is clearly rubbish and merely using a horrible event as way of making a political point.

Dimbag was and still is my all time hero. In fact he was basically the whole reason I even started playing the guitar. I hope that that sick son of a bitch who shot him burns in hell. Metal will never ever be the same without him here. I know he maybe gone, but deep down he still lives.

My boys and I from 61 will always remember your hard core playing Dimebag. One of my friends Chris Shaver and my cousin Kenny Tayler met Phil Anselmo
but everybody is always still thinking of the heavy metal experience you gave them

#97 — June 8, 2006 @ 05:19AM — Garrett

Dimebag is one of the most influential guitarist on me along with dave mustaine it is shame that he had to die for all us to realize how much a hero he was.

#98 — August 5, 2006 @ 02:57AM — steve

He was a great guitarist no doubt about it, but its been 2 years people, GET OVER IT! You have to remember Dimebag was just another person, JUST LIKE THE OTHER MILLION'S OF PEOPLE THAT DIE EVERYDAY, GOD GET OVER IT, LIVE WITH YOUR LIFE AND NOT HIS DEATH!

Wow, it's so hard to believe it's been 2 years today since metal lost one of it's greatest and influential guitar players. Dime's the reason I started playing guitar. I always felt like he was a guide to his fans. Teaching them to believe in their dreams and push boundaries to bold standards as he did so courageously and with the determination of a true metal hero. My whole heart and soul goes out to his family, friends and fellow fans. He was an amazing man and a real legend to all that had the pleasure of knowing him in some way or another. R.I.P Buddy. We are all a better person for having you in our lives.
