The Goatrance Primer

Parties are organized by a global network of artists, DJs, promoters, and labels. Commercialism is shunned. Besides the neo-hippie, the genre has really caught on with Israeli military personnel [a lot of the better Goa-trance these days comes from Israel], and yuppie Indians.

A number of parties are organized near Panjim and Anjuna by major Goa names like Goa Gil and Rajaram [who forms one half the band Shpongle with ex-Hallucinogen frontman, Simon Posford]. If you visit the US, make sure you catch the Burning Man festival. This is where you can see some of the best Goa DJs and artistes perform live. The festival is held every year in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA.

Drug usage is rampant amongst listeners of Goatrance in general, with mescaline, LSD, hallucinogen, and ecstasy taking the honors. Ecstasy use in this community has probably dropped during the past few years, but mainly because ecstasy has now become a mainstream drug, going against the ethic of the underground Goa raver.

While many consider Goa-trance to be an offspring of Psy and commercial trance, I think its the other way round. There would be no Ibiza today without the pioneering work of people like Goa Gil.

Before I conclude, here's a short list of artistes and track that would fit into most Goatrance fans' and Psytrance historians' 'best of' collections, that pretty much define the genre.

1. "L.S.D." by Hallucinogen
2. "Mahadeva" by Astral Projection
3. "A Psychedelic Trip" by Infected Mushroom
4. "Sitt I Soffan" by Abstrakta Araber
5. "Psycho Bitch From Hell" by Analog Pussy
6. "Ayahuascan Chant" by Ayahuasca
7. "Howling At The Moon" by Cosmosis
8. "Megallenic Cloud" by Green Nuns Of The Revolution
9. "All Hallows Morning" by Shakatura
10. "Syn System" by Voodoo People
Honorable mentions: Logic Bomb, Psysex, X-Dream, Jaia, Goa Gil, Fractal Glider, Asura, Cydonia, Ceiba, S.U.N. Project, and Yahel.
