Grammy Nomination Wish List

The 47th Annual Grammy Award nominees will be announced Tuesday at the Music Box in Hollywood. U2 and Eminem's new albums were released after the submission deadline (Sept. 30) but not so for the lead singles "Vertigo" and "Just Lose it," which should factor into the "Record of the year" category. Other Grammy standbys Prince, Alicia Keys and Norah Jones will likely grab "Album of the year" nods, as may Jay-Z's retirement album The Black Album and Green Day's obvious stab at relevance American Idiot.

New artists like Kanye West, Keane and Franz Ferdinand should be recognized by the Grammys, which has the reputation of being out of touch and behind the times. Even when the Grammys have tried to seem current, poor judgment has put them onto the wrong trend trails. Milli Vanilli, Nelly Furtado, Sisqo, Macy Gray and Hootie and The Blowfish are just a few examples.

See below for picks that should be considered. In the strange way in which the Grammys are labeled, "Record" means "song," "album" means "the full length CD," and "Song" means the "the award goes to the songwriter not the artist."

Album of the Year

Usher - Confessions
Kanye West - College Dropout
Interpol - Antics
Nelly - Suit
Brian Wilson - Smile

Record of the Year

Keane - "Somewhere Only We Know"
Kanye West - "Jesus Walks"
D12 - "My Band"
U2 - "Vertigo"
Usher - "Yeah"

Best New Artist

Kelis
Kanye West
Keane
Franz Ferdinand
Van Hunt

The actual nominees may be a very different list. Tune in tomorrow. The 47th Annual Grammy Awards will be awarded at the LA Staples Center on February 13, 2005.

Will Eminem and U2 be eligible for next year's Grammys? Considering how film-makers jockey to be eligible for the Oscar nominations, it is surprising that these blockbuster albums would pass up the chance.

They plan their releases so they can pick up awards in more than one Grammy year in my opinion. U2 and Eminem will be represented at the 2004 and 2005 Grammys. If they release another single from these albums after Sept. 30, 2005 it would mean the 2006 Grammys. U2's last album was in the 2000, 2001 and 2002 Grammys due to the singles.

hey, i agree with most if not all your picks. although Kelis is not a new artist. her first album is titled Kaliedescope.

i always like grammy time because it always reminds me of music i may have sat to the side in favor of a newer release.

peace!

Thanks for the note about Kelis. If she does not count as new, I would replace her with Snow Patrol for a Best New Artist nominee.
