If the concern of airlines is that we are heavier and thus cost more to haul, then why not charge us per pound? And if that is done, then they will have to make larger, wider seats available to larger wider customers. But they have done the opposite, making their seats progressively narrower and more cramped over the years in their desire to pack more bodies into an airplane. I dont know ANYONE, fat or not, who can sit comfortably in a 16 inch wide chair. If there is a safety issue involved it is due to the greed of the airline who insists on making seats narrower. Can you imagine GM or Toyota claiming that fat people shouldnt ride in their cars because they cant make it safe for them?

To use Dave Nalle's reasoning, no sympathy for the airlines. If they want to do business, they'll have to cope with the challenge of larger customers - unless they only plan to do business in areas of asia & africa where everyone is bone-thin.

I think it is ridiculous to blame fat people. Airports are a public service and should cater to the public. Hence, make wider seats. Or charge a little extra for the ticket. yeesh. You skinnies should should be fat for a day.

It's not my problem if your lardass spills over into my seat. Eat less-exercise more!

All I know is that the last time I flew back from Las Vegas on a budget charter flight, I was seated next to a really fat guy who spent the entire flight bitching to his wife about how narrow the seat was, and how lousy the food was, and how he had nothing to do but complain. I'm not saying it's necessarily that he was a prick because he was fat, but it sure wasn't helping build any sympathy.

I hope next time, he flew cargo.

Look on the bright side. Homosexuals are now officially the national whipping boy. An election turned on putting them in their place. At least gays can't be blamed for the troubles of our airlines.

First of all, I don't hate the airlines. Second of all, you're right about the government study andI should have been more careful in making that clear. However, weight is clearly an issue for airlines.

Does this make airlines evil for proactively dealing with it? Not in my book.

Did you even read that article? Nowhere does it say the airlines are complaining - it talks about a 'new government study'. NOT the same thing. Why not complain about your tax dollars at work, rather than beat an almost dead horse to death. You may hate the airlines, but show me one that makes a 1% return on investment/capital.

I'm sure that the rotund ones may cause some problems with the airlines(have you ever had to sit next to a monster) ...but I think they probably could shoulder a little of the blame also.

I think it's fair enough to draw the conclusion. I'm also glad that it brings attention to the huge costs of tiny increments in society.

America could use 25% less energy tomorrow and not feel a thing if the people took the steps necessary to do so.

By enacting a few measures like raising my thermostat in the summer and lowering it in the winter, and by using flourescent bulbs instead of incandescent ones, i've reduced my utility bills by about 40-50% over the last 2 years.

And I'm a republican!

of course it has nothing to do with the airlines putting 5 extra rows in airplanes!

I'll tell you this, as a frequent traveller, those people ain't getting fat on airline food!

So are you saying they shouldn't blame the fat people? Sounds like a reasonable cause/effect relationship to me.

Toting pounds (literally) is expensive.
