Tough Crowd's last show
Published November 05, 2004
It appears that Colin Quinn's 'Tough Crowd' show aired for the last time tonight. I didn't know about it in advance, or really care. I was simply getting off the couch from Daily Show to head downstairs and do this thing I do with you all... write. He mentioned in his monologue how this was their last show ever. I was fixed to the TV. Needless to say I sat and watched and processed it. I kinda grew up with Quinn, way back to MTV's Remote Control with Ken Ober. Then he took over and handled very well an awkward moment when he turned up on SNL anchoring the news, in the place of recently fired Norm McDonald.
We aren't here to talk about Colin so much, as we are the show... and why it is gone. First things first, the show was a poor man's 'Politically Incorrect'. That being said, the informality of the show (which is putting it nicely) made for good TV. The show had a freakishly open stance about dialogue on sex and race. I say freakish, because there are parts that the show opened up that no one else could have done. For example, I remember Quinn grilling Patrice O'Neil regarding, when will the blacks ever forgive us for slavery so we can try and move on as equals. Though there is a lot of subtext to analyze there... it really is a question that I (as I white guy) have thought about.
Sadly though, the show was too unstructured and too tolerant of errant racist minds. To watch the show became an exercise in watching hate. I can't do that, and have no respect for it (sorry, am still a Democrat). I honestly think that Nick DiPaulo ruined the entire show single-handedly. Well, he did for me anyhow. Holy shit was that guy a racist and a homophobe. For me, it really became a distraction. Way too often, he crossed the line. He simply hated blacks and gays. Because Quinn likes a good show, he would wisely fill the cast with Dipaulo, mostly black comedians, and almost always a gay sprinkled in (women too, Judy Gold was on weekly... and is apparently a 'player for the home team'. Now, normally this would make for great banter, the kind we are afraid to have at work because we all have an HR department. It was almost voyeuristic... but DiPaulo was more busy slandering his peers than trying to be funny. And, it seemed like he was on every show. Dude made Archie Bunker sound like a hippie.

I actually sent an e-mail to the comedy channel recommending that they not take this show off the air. Shows what my opinion is worth! maybe that's why they took it off the air???
What?!?!?!?!? Final episode? Damn, I'm bummed. What is the deal? Probably having a hard time in the ratings against leno/letterman. I watched the fruitcake lady and then switched back to Comedy Central. Last show? Damn! it was a good one...

TOUGH CROWD RULED!!!!!
I loved tough crowd. I loved its laid-back style and its "I don't care if people are offended" attitude. It was taken off the air because Colin and his guests told it like it is. People hate that for some reason. Anyway, my real reason for posting was to ask a question. Does anyone know if there will be a DVD released with all of the episodes on it?
Tough Crowd was a great show. As part of the Latino community the intellectual barbs on my race where refreashing and funny. If anyone does find a DVD, let me know
Ruben,
I'd like to make a recommendation. If you have a flavor of hispanic commentary and stand up comedy (and aren't afraid of laughing at everyone)... I highly highly recommend stand up comic Carlos Mencia. He is the MOST fresh, and vital voice to hit the scene since Chris Rock in Bring the Pain.
Tough Crowd was a great show. It's just a brutal fact that it was at its least entertainig when Quinn would scream about the Iraq War and his version of patriotism. It hurt because it wasn't funny. It became CrossFire or ??. Most everything else was awesome - and it will be missed if it's been cancelled.
Nick DiPaulo is a comic. Comics say funny, often inappropriate things. I've met the guy several times and he's neither a homophobe nor racist. In addition, he's really, really funny. Do you have a sense of humor, buddy?
pffft who are you to judge the show to watch it once? His show was awesome Im sure stewart is funny (paid by every hollywood liberal under table) colin wasnt however really paid what he might of fully liked , he atleast brought his whole character and personalilty on the show , a man with real opinions not anything some paid sellout could do.
Hey jackass, first off dont judge a show that you watch one time on the the final show. Its Patrice Oneal, not Anderson you misinformed ass. Where do you even get that? The bald little white comedian, Jim Norton is one of the best comics out there right now. It was one of the very few shows that actually spoke the truth about current events and topics and not giving some watered down, pseudo opinions on everything.
It stank. Nick was not a likable guy, except for guys who like assholes. Colin was often an ass, too, but he redeemed himself by being incompetent as a host/comic as well. The others were foils and set-ups, often better than the inept host(who can barely read his cue cards) and his Sancho Panza sidekick, Nick. Jumped the shark early and kept on doing it.
Tough Crowd was a great show the ass who wrote this only watched it once. pfffffffff maybe if you watched it often then you wouldn't make such uninformed comments about people being racist and ruining the whole show
Tuls,
You are profoundly incorrect. I watched the show rather often, because I am a big fan of comedians. The premise was great, but the execution was weak.
what is everyone yelling about?
I think some racist humor is funny sometimes, but Nick just sucks at jokes. He isn't witty or anything. What a fag.
You jumped to the conclusion that Nick Dipaolo "hates blacks and gays". No, he's just critical to their flaws and the flaws of all other groups and people, including himself and his friends. You just oversimplified because you can't handle truly open and unrestricted discussion. Nearly every person you have ever met is somewhat racist and sexist, incluing yourself, don't deny it. And yes, Nick was on nearly every episode, it was because he was funny.
But anway, as far as the show itself, what made it great was that it wasn't polished up like all the other shows. Colin made personally made sure screwed-up jokes and unfunny and ugly moments were not edited out. Comedy Central tried to replace it with so-called "edgy" shows like Mind of Mencia, but Carlos keeps TRYING to be edgy, he makes it a concious effort to try and say "edgy" and racist things, but in the end he's just trying to push buttons and elevate his ego. Tough Crowd didn't TRY to be edgy, they just spoke honestly without restirction, which would often lead to racist and unPC remarks, but they didn't lie, they didn't hype anything up, and they didn't make it a concious effort to try and push buttons. The show had a true sense of realism, and that is what is absent in nearly every other show.
I know people who are still boycotting Comedy Central because of Tough Crowd. Pulling that show off was a big mistake. The least they could do would be to put the show on DVD. I GUARANTEE you they'll sell.
On a personal level, I agree with you about Nick DiPaolo. I often felt a shiver down my spine when he spoke about race or sexuality or politics. That said, I'd like to think that Bill Hicks was right when he, on the idea of crossing the line, "there are no lines. let's get rid of all the lines." Like it or not, I don't think Nick said what he said intentionally to be provocative. I don't think any of them said anything for that reason. I think, as scary as it sounds, Dipaolo was genuinely speaking his mind. So I think, why not have that experience? I guess this is the voyeuristic nature of the show you were talking about? Why not get the experience of seeing a person like Nick Dipaolo go through his thought process (for lack of a better term.) I think that's better then watching some phony show in which people voice opinions that are unoriginal and dishonest. What better way to begin eradicating racism then to view in its unadulterated form?

What?!!! This show was great. I always thought it got good rating i'm sure it's not cancelled
