US Deploys Anti-Satellite Weapon

The U.S. Air Force has secretly deployed a weapon system capable of jamming enemy satellite signals. Why?
U.S. military control of space is one of four missions spelled out under a national space policy adopted by former president Bill Clinton in 1996. The goal is to make sure U.S. forces have unhindered access to space and space-based services and to deny an enemy any similar benefits. All I can say is that space-based weaponry will be the new arms race of the 21st century. This anti-satellite weapon system is just a precursor to the deployment of a broader space-based missile defense system. The United States, it seems, is finally realizing that stopping nuclear proliferation is a futile and hopeless task.

Actually, this system is not designed to destroy but to disrupt, with no permenant damage to the satellite.
That's good to hear; there's already too much debris floating around in orbit.

I thought they had decided against this. From what I've read, wargames show that when you knock out the enemy's satellites, nuclear exchange ensues. The reason being that when the enemy is blinded, they have to assume they are being attacked and respond with as much force as possible.
I guess that doesn't apply to non-nuclear opponents, though.
