Bjork bashes Beyonce

Bjork is so peeved with Beyonce that she has dissed Ms. Knowles.

Bjork has blasted Beyonce Knowles [pictured] for "selling her soul to the devil" and signing up for TV commercial after TV commercial.

The Icelandic singer admits she's a big fan of the Destiny's Child star's music - but she's very disappointed she has appeared in countless adverts from Pepsi to Tommy Hilfiger's latest perfume True Star.

She says: "I love her voice, but maybe not what she stands for. I'm really p**sed off she's doing all of those commercials. I can't believe she did Pepsi.

"Doing that is like selling your soul to the devil. Maybe it's different in America, and I'm judging too hard."

You have to appreciate Bjork for being earnest. But, she's taking the celebrity game too seriously. I suspect Beyonce's father, Matthew, a former sales executive, has made the decision to exploit every opportunity to mine money that comes the way of his daughters, Beyonce and Solange. He knows that in show business the five-year cycles don't necessarily last five years. So, he is likely to have advised them to strike while the iron is hot. Few chanteuses remain atop the music business for even a decade. Bjork's earnestness reminds me of my youthful righteousness. I used to have tests for what I considered acceptable behavior by public figures, too. Women who made anti-feminist statements were on it. Black performers who groveled in the presence of whites. Closet conservatives who emerged. Sometimes, my repulsion was justified, as when some celebrities evaded apartheid South Africa's deserved pariah status by playing Sun City. But, in regard to Beyonce's all American greed, its her prerogative. Fans who don't approve are free to vote at Sam Goody.

Everytime that car commercial comes on with the Clash's "Should I stay or should I go?" song, I involuntarily flinch, just like I used to do when they used that Ramones song in the beer commercial. For some reason, and I can't justify this, it bums me out more when I hear a commercial with the Who's "Baba O'reilly" in it more than a pop song by Britney or Madonna. I guess it's the performer's right to do what they wish with their creations, and like Mac says, we can vote at the record shop, or like me, just to to Limewire for my pop fixes. Of course, it it weren't for Volkswagon, I would not have become as familiar with Nick Drake as I am now, or remembered how much I love ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky"! Maybe it's all about the presentation and the level of saturation? Remember the short lived Madonna Pepsi commercial? That was the shizzy. I just wish bands like the Butthole Surfers and The Cramps would get some endorsements, I mean think of the possibilities! They would be shilling for products I could really get behind. And on that note, how about that Kelly Clarkson's booty?

...like the Butthole Surfers...

hmmm, now what kind of product would use the song "I Saw An X-Ray Of A Girl Passing Gas"?

Well...Beano, for one!

I hear President Carter is a big fan of "The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave"

Bashing Beyonce gets Bjork free publicity.

Even if most people don't care about fine shades of distinction between the various types of artists doing commercials, hordes of readers will rush to look at anything with a headline like "Bjork Bashes Beyonce" for reasons astutely observed by the great philosopher Jerry Seinfeld:

"Because men think if women are grabbing and clawing at each other, there's a chance they might -- somehow -- kiss."

Bjork surely knows this, even if it's at some unconscious, instinctive level.

I think Bjork is sincere. It is just that she and Beyonce are coming from really different places. Bjork has a global perspective, sense of history and the skepticism about capitalism that comes with it. Beyonce has been controlled by a show biz Dad from the time she was nine. If she has developed any political insight, it isn't apparent. Later, unfortunately, after the industry has done her some of the usual dirt, she may have time to read and develop an understanding of society beyond 'money can buy me baubles.'

Sad to say, I don't think Jay Z is a good influence on Beyonce. He is just as vapid as she is. At least half of his songs seem to be mainly bragging about stuff he's got.

But, still, it is her (actually Matthew's) prerogative.

I think I stopped griping about musicians selling out about the time the Rolling Stones went over.

On a related note, some European U2 fans are angry with them for signing the deal with Apple for a special edition iPod and the first ever digital boxed set for the iTunes Music Store.

Yeah, it sent me reeling seeing, first, Dylan pimping women's undies, and then Bono wailing in the service of iPod. And when we look back to the Stones and Clapton and Winwood and Smashmouth and on and on and on... Stomach-knotting time. Artists lose credibility with me when they put their art in service of The Man. That said, that one ad mentioned above reminded me of a hellacious ELO tune too, and U2's "Vertigo" is a great raveup. Still. It's dirty. It's crass. It cheapens the value of the music, which is a damned shame.

Of course musicians have the right to hawk their music any way in which they see fit and the marketplace will decide. I just know that the whole thing makes me feel dirty and sad.

Hey Natalie, Have your heard that song titled "Damn Shame" by Jay Farrar? It's such a great tune. Doesn't have anything to do with this post, but your comment triggered me.
