iPod-like Portable XM Radio
Published October 27, 2004
This has been all over the web the last few days, as XM and Delphi released the first portable satellite radio.
This could be the breakththrough type of device that the industry was looking for. Though it is a little pricey with an MSRP of $349.99, it does inlcude everything that most users would need.
It has a home kit, a car kit, and obviously it is portable. It is very interesting that it doesn't need an antenna. I wonder how well this thing will work indoors, in rural areas. The bigger cities have signal repeaters which is why XM/Sirius work in parking garages etc. It si my understanding that rural areas do not have this benefit.
I predict that less than two weeks after this thing is released (December timeframe) that someone will hav found a way to hack this device and extract the recorded content from the drive. I am sure the RIAA will have a fit when this happens.
So the question I pose to the (non XM/Sirius subscribers) readers here, would you shell out $349.99 for this device? Total cost of ownership for the first year will be close to $500 with subscription, taxes, etc. Is it worth it?

Sweet. Now hopefully Sirius comes out with one.
I own stock in Sirius, so I am biased :)
Interesting. vox populi - from reading your comments, it sounds like you would have little hope for this thing working properly. Is that correct?
I am suspicious myself. I have not experienced the problems that you have in my car. However, cars have significant antennas whereas they MyFi will have a tiny internal antenna. I will be surprised if this works as advertised.
From your entry and the link, it seems to be just a radio. Will people spend $349 for a device that doesn't do more? It seems to me that an MP3 player will be expected.
Also, the new iPod Photo just came to market. (Blogged here.) You get three uses: MP3 player, hard drive and photo storage and display. When people are making their Christmas buying decisions won't something like it seem to be a better deal if one is going to go expensive?
Well, if you look here, the pictures show that there is a car kit, a home kit, headphones, and a remote. It is somewhat more than a radio, as it can record 5 hours of programming, pause live music, rewind etc.
I do agree that, it would be even a better product if it could play MP3's as well.
The more I look at this device though, if someone is considering XM radio, the price is not that bad, for what you get.
Typically an XM tuner is around $80. A home kit is $70. Car kits are $70 as well. FM modulator for your car, another $50. So that all adds up to $250-$270 for any other setup, none of which can record music/shows, or are portable. If they had the ability to insert a memory card or connect it to a computer to add music to boot, this device would be tough to beat.
The photo iPod is getting bad reviews. The device has some limitations, but like the MyFi, is a step in the right direction.
Could you direct me to the bad reviews for the iPod Photo? I've only seen good ones.
Here are two that I remember.
The biggest problem is the audio defect that it has: http://www.engadget.com/entry/2240360724746782/
The few reviews that I read were similar to this one: http://www.adplusplus.net/adplusplus/2004/11/ipod_photo_disa.html
The consensus is that the iPod Photo isn't what it could/should be. Not to say it isn't cool, but the next generation will likely get it 100% right.
I found another which was similar from Gizmodo
"The photo part sounds like a fun toy, but not as good as it could be. Photographers should consider the 20GB Gmini 400, I think--it has a built-in CompactFlash reader, and can play movies."

XM and Sirius work in parking garages? I live in a city with several repeaters, and my XM cuts off when I go under some bridges and in all garages. I had the boom box in my house, but did not get a strong enough signal and returned it. Heck, even a tree lined road can cut off my reception momentarily.
Sirius was even worse, as it cut out under carports, bridges, and any obstruction.
I won't give up my XM, but I'll wait and see. This new device is just what I have been waiting for.
