How Many Villages?
Published October 22, 2004
I have no enmity to Hillary Rodham Clinton. As a matter of fact, I supported her in her endeavor to reform health care.
I don't have tremendous respect for her that she has accepted, like the good political wife she is, the diddlings of her husband. His ass would have been on the streets, but I realize that there is a much bigger picture in her case.
Her website is quite appealing.
In the last couple of days, she has made a speech regarding expanded medical benefits for Members of the Guard and Reserve through expanded Tricare (Health benefits for reservists and retired military. She was supported in that by Sentators Daschle, De Wine, Leahy, Saxby and Champliss and it was approved by the house this month.
I do not fault her for doing what she can in the health care arena. She tried, as first lady, to go broader, but was stopped at every turm by the insurance lobbies.
The President has not signed it but he has 180 days to do so.
But changes and improvements in health care for the members of the Guard and Reserve are paltry. They are insigificant in the face of Americans who don't have ANY healthcare.
I have made it my business to find out what she would do, if she could, for American health care in general. I have also made it my business to see what Condi Rice would do.
You see, I think in 2008 we are going to have quite the political race for President. Hillary vs. Condi....it is going to be heated, vituperous, and quite the spectator sport.
People will have to decide based on records, character, education, and other elusive things that only the gut can speak to.
What will Bill do as "first spouse"? There is no question he would have a place, but I suspect he won't ever have the chance to fill it....
Hillary has been very low profile in the current presidential race. The dems don't want the hassle, the republicans...well, thats a given.
I don't dismiss her. I don't particularly like her, but I don't dismiss her. How many villages does it take to raise a Senator from NY to the oval office?
It would be quite a race. Two women, which would unsettle at least fifty percent (50%) of the voters, AND an African-American, which would pull liberal voters to the conservative side. What a circus, and what a pleasure!
Whatcha' think?

God Bless Bryan :) A man after my own heart...LOL
Claire
I think liberals would find some reason to call Condi an Uncle Tom...that seems to be the best defense against right leaning african americans!
LOLOL...that is so lame. Any African American who goes mainstream is accused of that. It is ludicrous! Why should "African Americans" be limited in their choices any more than anyone else? Ideology has no ethnicity. Smart is smart. Idiocy has no color.
Claire
This is actually the first that I have heard or even considered the idea of President Condi. I am not against Hilary. I think she is a bright woman. I guess we will have to see how it all plays out. Go Kerry!!
Thank you Yensid and Andy for responding....I appreciate it..
Go W...but the race I propose would sure be a goodie!
Claire
Hillary vs Condi... sounds cool but I don't think there will be a female nominee until, say, 2040. I'd like to see Guliani run against Edwards (assuming Bush wins second term). And Arnold in 2012-16!
I think 2040 is a little pessimistic since 52 percent of the voters (or more) are women. However, I would like to see Rudy run against anyone...he would win hands down. If W had been smart, he would have let cheney step down for health reasons and put Rudy in his place.
Arnold can never be president since he is consititutionally prohibited. But an amendment could fix that. I wouldn't have any a problem with it....I am liking him...also his wife, and his actions. I think he is a smart man who has much to offer.
Claire
Arnold? He may be a good Gov for California but President is stretching it. Besides there is still no law passed allowing immigrants to run for President is there? If things continue on course Hillary will definately be the first female nominee and perhaps President. If I was forced to make a choice I would take her over Kerry any day.
Truth, you are right. It would take a constitutional amendment to allow Arnold to run. But remember, he is for all purposes a "kennedy"...its not out of the realm of possibility.
Insofar as Hillary is concerned, I hope she DOES run....against Condi. :) I would be very happy.
I would take Spongebob over Kerry...lolol
Claire
hey andy -
what's with the constant stereotyping? i'm a liberal and i would never label a conservative black person an uncle tom.
in fact, if colin powell (a 2-tour vietnam combat vet) was running, i'd vote for him over gw bush (a national guard deserter) in a heartbeat!
I would vote for Colin Powell so fast my cat would thing he had taken a trip around the moon and back. His wife (Colin's) is probably very smart to refuse to let him run. But he'd have my vote. Unqualified, unconditional.
Claire
Predictions:
The first black President will be a Republican.
The first female President will be a Democrat.
(That sorta rules out Condi...)
Thoughts?
Won't happen. Rice is not qualified to share the same teleprompter with Hillary Clinton. Clinton has proven herself as a lawyer, policy analyst and, now, senator. Rice has spent her entire adult life as the token colored child of far Right white folks. I suspect they are the only people who don't realize how transparent that ruse is. The disdain in which people like Clarence Thomas and Rice are held in the African-American community is stronger than elsewhere. But, most Americans see them for what they are.
Dawn thought people were cruel to circulate the 'I'm fighting for whitey' poster. But, I think it reflects an image many people have of Rice.
(Will post a link if my Archives ever cough it up.)
Kulture Kitchen has an interesting take on Condi Rice, called "Condoleezza Rice, a Sally Hemmings for the 21st Century." Read it.
'Fighting for Whitey' is blogged here. Scroll down to "Aunt Jemima has left the building."
Why does the term "crabs in a barrel" come to mind when I read MD's posts above?
Condi would have that problem of having to run on her record. Head of NSC during biggest terrorist attack on domestic soil. Head of NSC when war started on false intelligence.
Well, I guess she would be running as a REPUBLICAN so she might fit right in...
Sponge Bob is not a bad choice for President, but rumors of his asexual reproductive history may torpedo his chances..
RJ...you could be right...although, I think the first black female president might need to be a republican so she can pull from both sides. As a dem, she will go into the race with a handicap (i.e., all conservatives will vote her down, and some dems)..as a republican, she'll pull from BOTH parties...
Mac, I love ya a lot, but you are too funny....you are so stereotypical....Hillary would leave her "drawers" in the chair going up against Condi Rice. Hillary is a POLITICIAN deluxe....and everyone knows it. everything she says is suspect because she has exhibited such heinous judgment in her personal life, it transfers to her political life. Condi is above reproach...but hey, thats just a difference that we can agree to disagree on.
BTP...see above...there are lots of us who think she did a fine job...lots of us who VOTE...and the spongebob thang, I give ya props for :)
Claire
"Sponge Bob is not a bad choice for President, but rumors of his asexual reproductive history may torpedo his chances.."
LOL! :)
I can't take credit for the Sponge Bob remark. BTP said it.
However, that is, of course, one of Condi Rice's vulnerabilities. Rumored to be a lesbian, she would have even more 'plaining to do than Mary Cheney. People in the gay community have been asking Condi to come out and play for years, but she pretends to be deaf. Maybe a life in the closet causes auditory disfunction.
I have a feeling you did not read my links, Claire. They express what people not of the 'look at our colored child walk, what an accomplishment' persuasion think of Rice.
BTP's earlier remark is also cogent. Rice has been pretty much invisible except for her four years at the White House. Her period of viewability has led to an international disaster, the invasion and occupation of Iraq. (Hmmm. Maybe she will become the scapegoat. Would serve her right.)
Compared to Sen. Clinton's recognition and accomplishments, Rice barely has a leg to stand on. Maybe we should all be applauding the Right's colored child for walking.
MD, I am asking a genuinely heartfelt question after reading your link above; Why is it that some members of a minority consider a minority's success to be based on anything lesss than merit, or worse, as "selling out" or whatever popular term you want to call it?
Is the "white male majority" in America so powerful that a minority cannot have any success unless they subjugate themselves to it?
This quote, from your link,"After all, if Colin has the light skin to make you forget his negritude, Condolezza has the education and social "cachet" that makes her whiter than most white people." The author goes on to justify herself by saying she too is light-skinned, and knows about "passing". Funny how she previously sidesteps Rice's obviously dark skin by saying Rice's education made her acceptable to us evil snow devils.
You yourself do Ms Rice a disservice but making a statement based on assumption,"Rumored to be a lesbian, ... [m]aybe a life in the closet causes auditory disfunction"
No proof, but it suits your point, so run with it.
MD, you are obviously not stupid, but your shrill pomposity really hinders your cedibility at times, that is disappointing.
I believe most people of color applaud the success of other people of color, SFC Ski. But, there are caveats. Liza, over at Kulture Klub, has zeroed in on them indirectly. Let's break'em down:
~ The person must not have adopted views that he knows from experience and education are false and hurtful to people of color.
~ The person must not have rejected his ancestry and history to 'fit in' with the white and powerful. (Not that they really fit in, anyway.)
~ The person must not be an opportunist, but someone committed to worthwhile goals he sincerely holds.
~ Repeat. Worthwhile goals. (A desire to aid imperialism, as reflected in support for the Bush administration's war is not a worthwhile goal.)
~ The person must be independent, not reliant on the white and powerful. (The house slave syndrome, in which blacks attached themselves to whites to achieve status, is thereby rejected.)
I have stopped short of calling Rice a war criminal as the irrepressible cartoonist Aaron Magruder did. But, I believe that is how she is viewed by many poltically aware people of all 'races.'
Condoleezza Rice stands absolutely no chance of being taken seriously as a political candidate. I doubt she can even be elected to the D.C. city council.
I would imagine that CR would decline any candidacy offered, nor pursue one on her own. The thought of hearing back her own contradicting statements isn't something I think she's interested in. It makes my head spin trying to keep up with her constant double-speak. I wonder if the torture of having your misstatements (" More than 75% of known Al Queida leadership"..."Known leadership in the ten's to hundreds." Which is it?), looped through attack adds sounds like her next endeavor? Everything she says winds up being remotely true, but out of the context for which the public needs to hear the facts. (Bending the truth) Do you think she truly believes what she says in her professional student mind? With 5 degrees to her credit, maybe she has as many dimensions of truth she believes in?
I do think she may be a lesbian, but it makes no difference to me who she goes to bed with at home when she is in bed with 'this' Administration!
War criminal too.
I've got to say that the black and white thing can easily be overplayed with both Condi Rice and Colin Powell. To not think that Democrats and Liberals will not hold these two fully accountable for their records in an administration with massive blunders in intelligence and foreign policy is to think that Democrats will apply the "soft bigotry of low expectations" to these individuals because they are black.
We leave it to Republicans to apply the "soft bigotry of low expectations" to George Bush, who isn't responsible for anything, because he is, after all, only George Bush and we can't expect any better from him.
Exactly! By objective standards, it is clear that people like Rice and Clarence Thomas are just tokens. Their entire 'careers' have been as attachments to far Right white people. They can't point to anything they've done that wasn't in furtherance of those people's agenda.
If people like Bush Sr., John Ashcroft, Dick Cheney, the Sessions, etc., had their way, segegration would never have ended. Their notion of integration is to keep the non-white masses second-class citizens and put forth a few tokens as window dressing. Fortunately, only a relatively few people are willing to play their game. So, the GOP is deservedly without persons of color to run for office. Alan Keyes notwithstanding, of course.
(Actually, I would not be surprised if Claire posted an entry putting Keyes forth as a viable political candidate. She seems to be one of those people who have no knowledge of civil rights history or race relations.)

I say go for it :)
I say Bush 2004, Condi 2008 :)
