TERMINAL OVERLOAD

"The planes came from everywhere. We just lined them up and put them on the ground. But the most amazing thing of all is that from the time we got the last of those six or seven airplanes on the ground, if you looked at our radarscope, there was nothing on it...That is an extremely eerie thing to see." < Tom Shannon, Quad City International Airport Controller, 9/11 >
>kAble<>> suspicious >> nervous >> epileptic...
damn him if he wasn't absorbing my every movement...
Airport-Security-fucking-stranger...
What were you expecting me to do?
And then there was the sign...
"Any unattended vehicles will be towed..."
By now...
Well...
Mmm...
Hello, post-9/11-aftermath-world...
Suitcase terrorism, bitch...
Air-Marshal guardians...
Racial profiling...
Hi-tech chemical-trace-vacuums...
"We'd just like to take this opportunity to welcome you aboard...
< vOyA > Such smooth, clear surfaces....
stupefying light refracting over and over....
till brand-name take-away seems strangely appealing >
and progressive neurological chaos seems....
well, just damn well fine.
In fact, incredibly.... numbingly fine....
"Attention Customers.
The following items will be confiscated....
KNIVES, SCISSORS.... ANY SHARP OBJECTS...."
Ah....
urgency and threat crashing through the calmness
of a recorded voice....
All those damn x-ray machines....
false security in a radiation haze....
The degrees of jetlag....
of airport lag....
where latent terrorism spikes > latent disaster.
If only in our minds....
or in the baggage of our anonymous flight companions.
>kabLe < Gushing...
Rushing...
Splicing time-zones...
Nerves-of-steel...
Frequent-flyer-hoardes...
More than 600 million traveled by air last year...
600 million+ potential disasters...
Retinal-scans Big Brothers' insurance...
From a Pennyslvanian Penitentiary to Terminal 4...
We can't guarantee you'll get there in one piece...
Sign O The Times sure is a bitch...
"Do I look like a bloody terrorist?"
A woman asks...
We're all potential terrorists, honey...
"I.D. please Madam..."
Total fucking recall...
Psycopaths have taken over the airwaves...
The-Mile-High-Club...
Shute >>
Did that ever really happen?
"Anthrax-on-Rye, Sir?"
Portals of Paranoia...
Portals of Close Proximity...
Where the jackpot is one-son-of-a-bitch-lucky-dip....
You have to ask yourself, vOyA...
Are you feeling lucky?
< vOyA > To be honest with you Sweetheart....
I'm feeling unusually lucky....
lucky enough to be transported by brazen desire >
into the unknown.... to well.... see what's there....
With this being something like the
Jetlag Generation and all....
I mean, sometimes....
life is like some kinda terminal Holding Zone....
with vast artificially lit spaces and recycled air....
recycled germs....
Everything so-damn-familiar....
so-damn-impersonal....
Disorientation, fatigue >
the constant noise that's strangely numbing....
Jet lag it seems....
well, lingers in us all....
but in the airport the LAG....
implying something vague....
drifty.... jumbled....
eerily fragmented and disconnected....
deepens. You know....
Eno's Music For Airports
played stiflingly LOUD....
And now....
with the possible intent of terrorism....
scattering the bees in our minds....
"I think airports themselves are like geographic jetlag - they're neither here nor there, they're not home but they're not really foreign either. They're these strange in-between places." < Pico Iyer >
>kabLe <
Meanwhile...
There we sit...
On the tarmac...
Awaiting the scythe of destiny...
Awaiting that familiar tic...
>> of mass-population >>
of a terminal seizure >>
Are we really that disposable?
Not quite...
The blink of a fucking eye...
Perhaps...
damn, this age of polarity...
Religion in the aisles...
The albatross on our backs.
>> "We do hope you enjoyed your flight ...">>
< to be continued.... of course >
