Tom Ripley never learned that people like you if you have something to offer, and that that thing very often isn't money. Tom's problem is that in the final account, while he had many gifts, inside he was a pretty vacant guy with little to offer because he was so self-centered and sorrowful and angry. That was why he didn't get far in life and that's the truth as I see it. In reality, if anyone was the snob, it was Tom Ripley himself and we all fell short of his expectations.

Poor thing.
