As expected, this DVD release of Devotional does provide a second disc of bonus material beyond the concert itself. Here the extra material is well chosen and adds significantly to the overall package. There is a set of songs from the concert recorded in Dolby surround featuring simply the Anton Corbijn video projections as visuals. These are strikingly effective, and for those of you with big screen setups or access to multiple video screens, they would provide a fantastic party backdrop. An MTV Rockumentary is included which does give some interesting insight to Martin Gore's creative process ('My songs sound too Pop if I write in a major key') and, sadly, Dave Gahan's drug issues are apparent in his mumbling, sometimes off-target, interview segments. A few music videos are included although these seem significantly less effective after viewing the concert. Finally, for those seeking even more insight into the visual creative process, Anton Corbijn shares comments about his own work.

Perhaps the best test of the quality, and enduring appeal, of a concert film resides in a simple question. Would I have wanted to be there? After viewing Devotional I can only respond with a resounding YES Devotional will be an enduring and valuable addition to your music and video collection.

excellent job Bill, I saw that tour and it was just as you described it - I've always been a very big fan but seeing the difference between their very first tour as unknowns at the Roxy (or Whiskey, can't remember) in LA in '81 and this tour in '93, their growth as performers and cultural figures was astonishing. Thanks!
