Under the Cherry Moon

Ok ok, I know you're saying this is the box-office disaster following up Purple Rain. Yes, it is, but seriously, take a second look! Purple Rain still looks rather amateurish after all these years - an excuse to preserve something of the early 80's Minneapolis club scene that is now a significant part of our collective Pop music consciousness. Under the Cherry Moon is something else entirely. And it's now available on DVD!

The film was clearly Prince's attempt to produce something worthy to be called art on the screen. It really doesn't succeed at that level, but remains great fun to watch. The camera loves Jerome Benton (Morris Day's 'valet' in the Time) as Prince's (Christopher Tracy in the film) sidekick Tricky and Kristin Scott Thomas is quite charming in her film debut. Did I mention the glorious setting of Nice, France filmed in gorgeous black and white? And those clothes?

The music (from the album Parade) holds up very well here. It blends well with film. Like Purple Rain, Under the Cherry Moon has a fantastic opening musical montage. This time we see stunning aerial shots of Nice synched with Christopher Tracy's Parade. A good 'let's start the boombox to get the rich folk to really dance' scene is included and whose music would you have been more likely to play if you really wanted to get them on their feet? Prince gets them all doing that cobra-style hand-waving thing (ok, you have to watch the film).

Don't watch Under the Cherry Moon expecting deeply affecting emotion or artistic treasure. However, if you want to laugh, enjoy the scenery, and maybe even shake a limb or two to funky music, there's a good evening here. Plus...there is a bonus to this DVD. The Parade videos are included - Mountains, Anotherloverholeinyohead, Girls and Boys...and the must-see video for Kiss, possibly Prince's best single video ever.

The reviews were so bad on this I have never even seen it - thanks for the heads up and welcome!

Under the Cherry Moon was maudlin, with a weak, cheesy plot set up for narcisstic self-pity. The cheap martyrdom theme didn't impress me. However, all of that (except for the martyrdom part) would apply Purple Rain as well.

This is though, as Mr Lamb suggests, much more of a movie, with sets and scenery and such. Whereas Purple Rain was more obviously thrown together on a minimal budget with whatever happened to be on hand in Minneapolis.

Plus, these Parade songs are maybe even a little better than the Purple Rain soundtrack - if that is possible.

Prince pushed this stinky turd out 18yrs ago. And 18yrs later after we have all forgotten about him, the movie is still a piece of crap.

I beg to differ. Prince is all but forgotten today. He thrives, which is fortunate.

Sadly, ignorance does so as well.
