The Munsters remake: Another nail in the coffin

The MunstersSigh.

The Wayans brothers are going to be helming a remake of the beloved 60's TV show "The Munsters". According to the report, the movie "will stay true to the original characters, but will place them in a contemporary setting."

"True to the original characters".... right.

Here's my prediction:

- It will of course be PG and not G rated due to some "adult humour".

- There will be double entendres and other borderline sexually related dialogue and revealing outfits for Marilyn and and Lily.

- Lots of low brow humor.

- I will not be taking my daughter to see it.

I'm sure the studio behind the live action Scooby-Doo movies thought that those were "true to the original" as well. I think my daughter and I will stick with "TV Land" on my big screen instead of bothering with new and updated versions of old TV shows, since filmmakers today seem to be incapable of making anything funny without toilet and/or adult humor.

well, then again, who would'a thunk The Adams Family would work? But it did, twice in fact.

Duke,

Good point. You're always adept at pointing out the exceptions to my posts. ;-)

Vic, still, it's a fairly odd exception. Most likely this will indeed reek of suck.

You "puritan" cynics are also forgetting the fanstastic big screen remake of the "Brady Bunch" and an equally compelling sequel a couple of years later. The movies were filled with sight gags, inside jokes and even a few double entendres - and heaven forbid - a few references to the lust brewing between Greg and Marcia.

You also forget "Maverick" which was a very good remake of the 60s TV series.

For the record, not everyone who goes to the movies (a) Takes their children, (b) want to see cutesy "Good Ship Lollipop" G-rated pap.

Are you really being a critic of a movie that hasn't even been filmed yet, or are you just railing against pop culture as a whole?

CC, I think he is railing against the fact that most remakes or adaptations of classic fare generally suck ass. The fact that it's being helmed by the Wayans brothers, who, despite a few real gems, have a fairly spotty track record, certainly doesn't help.

generalized ass-sucking is indeed worth railing against.

I am particularly sensitive to this one, however, my daughter is named after Lily Munster.

some of what makes shows from that particular era great is: the general cheezzziness of the effect.

i mean, come on, "Spot" under that stairs was cool because it was done, well, so badly.

modern special effects just won't help.

You're right CC, we should take all family-oriented fare from the 60's and do PG-13 remakes. Maybe someone should do an R-rated version of "Gilligan's Island"... make it more like "Cannibal Holocaust", hmm?

It's not your fault you've grown up in a culture where it's impossible to make something funny without having it be A.Sexual or B.Gross.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a stick in the mud... I absolutely LOVED "Kill Bill" 1 & 2, along with classics like "Animal House" and other such fare.

Some of those old shows from the 60's were (and still are) hysterically funny and we can watch them as a family without worrying about adult content. I shudder to think how a remake of "I Dream of Jeannie" would be done today, and I'm sure that somewhere out there a script *must* be floating around for that. Sure, at the time it seemed naive, but there was something endearing about the guy never taking advantage of his situation.

I also agree that the "Brady Bunch" remakes were very well done, but IMO that's the exception, not the rule, and not the way I imagine the Wayans brothers will make this film.

Vic,

I certainly understand your point of view. My feeling about remakes of old TV classics is the same as my feelings on gay marriage.

Remaking a TV classic as a modern movie in no way ruins the TV series. They are inviolable bits of history that will never change.

Just like if a few gay people get married, my wife and I are not suddenly *less* married.

I don't think the problem is necessarily that the television series will be tainted by the presence of the film version, but just rather that the film itself will suck ass.

#12 — August 25, 2004 @ 21:27PM — Vic [URL]

I guess I just believe that if someone wants to make a crappy movie, they should just start from scratch instead of trying to suck in fans of an old TV show by basing it on that.

Saves them half the work of creating characters I suppose...

"...they should just start from scratch instead of trying to suck in fans of an old TV show..."

This would imply that some sort of - dare I say it? - creativity would have to come into play?

Hollywood? Creativity?

Parser error.
