Thousands Of NYers To Lose Licenses Over Phony Social Security Numbers By Art McFarland (New York-WABC, August 18, 2004) — Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers will soon be hoofing it. They are having their drivers licenses revoked for allegedly providing bogus social security numbers.
Providing bogus social security numbers is illegal. Right? Last time i checked it was.
There have been demonstrations outside City Hall today proving that this is a controversial issue. At the heart of it is the fact that you have to have a Social Security Number to get a driver's license in New York State in most cases. But the DMV is set to confiscate nearly a quarter of a million licenses from people who allegedly provided phony state documents.That state effort has drawn a strong response on both sides of the issue.
Drivers who are ineligible for DMV cards say the crackdown is going to far.
By ineligible they mean illegal immigrants.
Supporters see the crackdown as a weapon against terrorism. Sally Regenhard is the leader of a group that supports families of 9/11 victims. But immigrants and their supporters say the crackdown threatens their livelihood and amounts to discrimination. Giovanni Puello, Legislative Staff Member: "We feel that it is counter-productive to require a social security number for people who do need their cars and trucks to provide for their families and provide for themselves."
No, it's not counter productive. It's the law. Problem is, the minute you are an illegal alien you are breaking the law. Then by providing a fake SS number, you are breaking the law x2. It's counter productive to waste time by going after illegals who shouldn't be here in the first place and then break even more laws. The courts time can be much better served.
Fernando Mateo, Community Activist: "We should give them the opportunity to surrender those licenses, at least within a 90-day amnesty program to clean the system out once and for all. Hunting them down is alot harder then asking them to voluntarily surrender them." Supporters for some of the immigrants are calling for a system that would provide driver licenses for people who don't have social security cards. There will be more demonstrations and more hearing on what has now become a national security issue.

A DL often equals a vote, thanks to the idiotic "motor-voter" law.
I expect illegal immigrants, whose first act upon entering this country was to break a federal law, will strongly support Kerry in November.
No wonder some people think taking their DLs away is so bad...

No, RJ, felons don't tend to vote for Democrats.
And with this administration, it's even worse - they get highly-placed job working for it (okay, they were pardoned by Bush's dad, but they did the crimes).
I don't think you people understand, and that is the problem. If the undocumented or illegals are subject to a suspension, many of them will resort to driving without insurance, and who pays the bill then in the event of an accident - I'll give you a hint, it isn't them. Also someone should really start shouting it that being undocumented in America is a civil disobedience, much like parking in a fire zone, or having a loud party. Drunk driving is a greater crime in the eyes of the law. The people who server your food, lay your floors, clean your toilets, wash your laundry, build your houses are all undocumented. If they are suspended they will leave this country and then what will you do. Seriously it is better for them to be insured, then you can get your food delivered without incident and your car washed at ten p.m.
It makes alot of sense for the NYS DMV to limit the amount of licensed drivers on the road. Everyday there are more than 1000 cars registered in each local DMV NYC ditrict office, and the amount of cars taken off teh road is much less. Yes, some of the "illigal" unlicensed drivers will turn to driving without insurance but then that will be a job for Insurance Services and the NYPD, aswell as the Enforcement and Investiagtion departments of the DMV. You can't expect the DMV to allow ILLEGAL immigrants to have a license because of what those illegal immigrants might do. It is a sad situation because many illegal immigrants need a license to hold a job in such fields like car service, taxis, delivery, construction and more. The DMV has to protect "the people" of NY to the fullest extent of its power.
Illegal immigration is a huge issue, especially now that we have to be even more vigilant in enforcing access to the US. If there was a way for a Border Guard to discriminate between someone coming into the country to work at some job, and a terrorist infiltrator, it would not be such an issue, but now it has to be.
When you can't get a cab in NYC, I wonder how this issue will be looked back on.

Providing bogus social security numbers is illegal. I am so tired of the amnesty idea. Its like cheating on a test. If you catch someone doing it ....do you give them another chance? When everyone else studied and passed. If so why, even have requirements or goals or laws at that matter?
If they are suspended they will leave this country and then what will you do.

Illegals are vermin. They are entitled to NOTHING: no benefits, no help, no sympathy, no amnesty, no rights. If they want those things, they need to go HOME to where ever they came from & work to make their OWN countries prosperous, instead of coming here and stealing our assets & benefits which we have worked so long & so hard to create. He canceled licenses for illegals when elected last year (Yay), is now about to issue them again (Boo).
We got rid of Governor Davis, in part, for doing the same thing. We may not have a Republican governor for long.
