The Last Broadcast - Matthew EP

The Last Broadcast are some old-school emo rockers. My first impression is that this band listens to a lot of Christie Front Drive, or the first record by Mineral, Something About Failing. Maybe even Appleseed Cast, End of the Ring Wars. The songs are in the same vein and overall, I would say this is a pretty solid EP.

Another observation that I am sure the band wouldn't want to hear, but is in fact a compliment in my mind is that their lead singer sometimes sounds like Johnny Reznick of the Goo Goo Dolls. This is probably an indie band's worst nightmare, but there is something about his breathy singing on verses, which reminds me.

As I said, this band seems to be going for that late 90's indie/emo sound. The difference is that the time has passed for many of those bands. I am not sure if it is my sense of nostalgia that allows me to accept the kind of lyric writing and music from those older bands. I am less willing to accept it now, probably because I am turning into an old codger and those ultra emotive lyrics really aren't meant for me anymore. Either way, these are the fingerprints that are all over the Matthew EP.

That being said, the music is really good. The first song, Matthew, gets a little self-indulgent with its length, but I like it anyway. The lyrics are a little overly dramatic if you ask me, but it definitely fits in with the music. "All hail none of these. They can't compare to you, Matthew." The album gets rocking with some pretty interesting guitar histrionics.

The best overall song on the album is Monarchs. It has a driving beat through the verse and cuts to half speed so your head can bounce through the melodic chorus. It has one weird guitar line going during the chorus, which is strangely appealing as it groans in the background almost at odds with the vocals. It creates a nice overall sound and this song, I imagine, was a good set closer.

Anyway, this EP is pretty good overall even if the style is somewhat dated in my opinion. Good is good and this melody-driven EP will keep you interested.
