Eric's Quick Picks - School of Rock

Written by Eric Olsen

After a vicious spate of depressing art dramas, we veered headlong into high-spirited comedic territory last weekend with School of Rock, the Jack Black star vehicle from director Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, Waking Life, Slacker, Tape).

Sometimes the most preposterous set-ups yield emotional truth, and that applies here: Black is a veteran never-was rocker booted from his pretentious band as a general embarrassment, desperately in need of cash to pay the rent, who intercepts an emergency call from a prestigious prep school intended for his substitute teacher roommate.

You can telegraph the plot line out yourself: anarchistic rock dude substitute teaches at stuffy prep school, disrupts system, ingratiates himself with some via sheer brio, antagonizes others, teaches kids to loosen the hell up and rock out, learns responsibility, gets caught, positive attributes outweigh sins, all are better for the culture clash.

A hungover, corpulent career rocker who can't get his shirt to stay tucked - unburdened by the slightest hint of training and bearing stolen credentials - walks into the snootiest prep school in the state and is handed a class of 10 year-olds to do with as he pleases without so much as being ID'd or observed in the classroom by anyone from the administration? This happens about once in a ... NEVER.

Among other glaring holes in the script are the "soundproofing" of the classroom with a couple of pillows and a seat cushion that wouldn't suppress the sound of a particularly robust fart, let alone a full-on rock band with amped electric guitars, bass, pounding drums, keyboards, four singers, two turtledoves and a partridge in a pear tree.

In real life the din would have alarmed dogs a mile away and drawn every single occupant of the building to their door within the first five minutes.

A roomful of 10 year-olds could have kept the secret that their sub was ignoring the regular curriculum in favor of teaching them rock band essentials (and adjunct roles like sound and lights, security, management) from their parents, brothers, sisters, other students, other teachers, the administration, the rest of the world, for three full weeks in a universe where 10 year-olds don't have mouths.

yea, i saw this at a hotel (honest, it was School of Rock, not a porno, really!)...

and thought it was a charmer.

i particularly liked them playing "It's A Long Way To The Top" as the credits rolled.

#2 — August 10, 2004 @ 14:36PM — Eric Olsen

yes, that was funny and was always my fave AC/DC song until "Highway to Hell" came along. Jack's lack of being Bon Scott was rather evident on that one, though.

#3 — August 10, 2004 @ 16:27PM — Jim Carruthers [URL]

I thought "School of Rock" was amusing, but seemed to be made to pay the bills for Mike White and Jack Black, rather than really kick out the jams. I was disappointed that Joan Cusack couldn't do more than a Stevie Nicks karaoke.

"Almost Famous" was a better movie for "classic rock" and never-was bands (plus it had Kyle Gass as a DJ).

#4 — August 10, 2004 @ 16:37PM — Eric Olsen

no doubt Almost Famous was a better movie, but School of Rock was more spirited and entertaining. I actually kind of hate Cameron Crowe

#5 — August 10, 2004 @ 16:52PM — Jim Carruthers [URL]

I actually kind of hate Cameron Crowe

Sound like jealousy, c'mon, married to Nancy Wilson, wrote for Rolling Stone, Fast Times At Ridgemont High? Some-bo-dy-s jea-lous. Or wait, did he once bitch-slap you in an Ohio Players vs Grand Funk karaoke contest?

#6 — August 10, 2004 @ 17:01PM — Bob A. Booey [URL]

The best AC/DC song is "Shook Me All Night Long."

I like that Olsen hates Cameron Crowe. While I liked Almost Famous, I hate movies like Jerry Maguire and he's dangerously close to being the Zemeckis/Spielberg kind of sappy, faux sentimental, manipulative nostalgia masquerading as art film-making that I hate. People need to be willing to criticize Baby Boomer icons like Crowe since he's way too adored lately.

That is all.

#7 — August 10, 2004 @ 17:05PM — Mark Saleski [URL]

...he's dangerously close to being the Zemeckis/Spielberg kind of sappy, faux sentimental, manipulative nostalgia masquerading as art film-making that I hate

yea, yea....but you got a little weepy during the group singalong of "Tiny Dancer".

admit it.

ADMIT IT!!!!!!

#8 — August 10, 2004 @ 17:43PM — Jim Carruthers [URL]

Nah, M. Booey, if that is your real name, was the nervous non-verbal drummer who blurted out he was gay when he thought the plane was going to crash. (I could say "going down" but that joke is even too cheap for me).

#9 — August 10, 2004 @ 17:54PM — Dawn

Jack Black is and will always be best known (at least in my book) for his role as "slacker record store geek" in "Hi-Fidelity" which just so happens to have the sexiest man alive in Hollywood in the lead role - yeah, that's right JOHN CUSACK, (who's sister coincidentally was in - that's right "School of Rock".

And I know for a fact that Jim C. is extremely jealous of John Cusack for nailing Canadian babes.

Oh, and "School of Rock" was really fun - and the script was well done.

#10 — August 10, 2004 @ 18:03PM — Jim Carruthers [URL]

Yes, Dawn, you've got it totally right, I really resent John Cusack for being taller, more handsome and charming than me, and on top, totally ruining that "hold the boombox over your head on the front lawn to seduce totally hot babeage" thing,

Hey, wasn't that a Cameron Crowe script?

#11 — August 10, 2004 @ 18:06PM — Eric Olsen

Jealous? Maybe. But I am married to Dawn Olsen; also wrote (briefly) for Rolling Stone, though certainly not when it counted; and the only thing I really like about Fast Times is Jeff Spicoli; Almost Famous is rather melodramatic and silly; I like Jerry Maguire pretty well, but mainly for Renee and Cuba; I also liked Singles pretty well, but mostly as a snapshot of the Seattle grunge scene and Bridget Fonda, who was particularly cute (that word specifically) in it.

Ultimately, when I have as much money as he does, I will no longer be jealous.

Mainly what it is is he looks like someone I want to smack

#12 — August 10, 2004 @ 18:29PM — Eric Olsen

Oh, and I didn't say "Highway to hell" is the best AC/DC song, I said "It's a Long Way to the Top" was my favorite until "Highway to Hell" came out - the Back In Black album with "You Shook Me" was later, after the great Bon died of being a terminal fuck up. Brian has done all right, though. "you Shook Me" is the most indelible, but I am really really sick of it after DJing through the '80s and '90s.

#13 — August 10, 2004 @ 18:40PM — Jim Carruthers [URL]

Well, anybody with any bit of sense knows "Back In Black" is the best AC/DC album, and should only be listened to entirely.

But if you need only one of the rock covered chocolates in that box, the only one to go for before all others is "You Shook Me All Night Long".

You could even go into a class of kids and assert that, and not one of the little pricks could challenge you.

#14 — August 10, 2004 @ 19:43PM — Bob A. Booey [URL]

John Cusack's a dork. He's not hot.

Bridget Fonda is hot.

Is Dawn Olsen hot?

AC/DC is hot.

That is all.

#15 — August 10, 2004 @ 20:02PM — Dawn

John Cusack is hot.

Bridgette Fonda is cute.

Jane Fonda is not hot.

Dawn Olsen is mean.

AC/DC also means a bi-sexual, which could be hot to some.

Is Bob A. Booey a dork?

That is all.

#16 — August 10, 2004 @ 20:15PM — HW Saxton Jr.

John Cusack is...A good actor.

Bridget Fonda is hot.

Jane Fonda was hot. Ummmmmm, Barbarella.

Henry Fonda is cool.

Dawn Olsen is honest.

AC/DC = Aardvarks Cook Delicious Crepes

That's not all.But it's more than enough

#17 — August 10, 2004 @ 20:29PM — Aaron, Duke De Mondo [URL]

Eric, great review. I love this flick dearly, and would have to go as far as to say its better than Almost Famous (sorry Jim) Which is not to say i don't like Cameron Crowe. Jerry MacGuire is one of my most cherished flicks of all ever.
He can shove vanilla sky up his arse, tho.
As to John Cusack, not that im gay you understand, but if i were indeed gay, i would imagine i would find john cusack very very attractive indeed. If i were gay. which im not. but if i was. only if i was, mind. Certainly wouldn't find him attractive at the minute, what with The Duke being more masculine than a pint full of testosterone. But if i WERE, however unlikely.

#18 — August 10, 2004 @ 20:49PM — Eric Olsen

I think John has grown into his looks, and what was dorky and callow is now sophisticated and grizzled.

#19 — August 10, 2004 @ 20:56PM — Jim Carruthers [URL]

"So they took me and they booked me, for assault and eventually possession of dangerous drugs, and threw me in the tank. I sat down and lit a cigarette, and a tough-looking black dude about thirty years old bummed one from. "Whut you in for?"

"Being ahead of my time."

He just looked at me. For a second I thought he was going to laugh, but he didn't. "Yeah," he said. "Me too.""

-- Lester Bangs, Creem November, 1972

What!? He said it better than I coulda. And he was in "Almost Famous" played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, the Rich Man's Jack Black.

#20 — August 11, 2004 @ 00:49AM — Bob A. Booey [URL]

Wait wait ....

Cameron Crowe directed Vanilla Sky? I forgot that somehow. If so, I forgive him all his yuppie sins. Even if the original by Almodovar was supposedly superior, that was still a great film.

Jane Fonda's hot. Even in her old age, I'd throw her one just because of the hot piece of ass she once was and I don't do old chicks. This woman made millions on those stupid workout tapes on the basis of her body well into her 50s. She'd just have to turn around so I couldn't see her wrinkles.

Bisexuality's only hot for chicks. If you're a bisexual man, you're gay but covering your bases socially.

Dawn Olsen tries so hard to be mean but I don't think she is. You keep bashing them fruits, though, Dawn. USA USA USA!

John Cusack is old and dorky. He is apparently quite the serial dater in Hollywood, though, and has no compunctions about dating trash like Britney Spears, so he's not the mild-mannered geek his roles would lead you to believe. He's just not a particularly good-looking guy. And his sister is a horrible actress whose career has evaporated in the last few years and could use a facelift.

Jerry Maguire is an abomination.

Duke: even though I found your writing entertaining, I'm gonna call you out. I hope you won't mind since you're all man, but don't you think you're just a lil bit gay for Eric Olsen? Just a lil bit maybe? You're like a fawning puppy :) Dawn should be jealous and start bashing some fruits since she's tough and mean. Grrrrrr.

Both Cameron Crowe and John Cusack have been fairly active celebrities in supporting Democratic politics. And we all know Jane Fonda's political past.

And finally, I'm a far cuter dork than John Cusack ever was. The ladies know what I'm sayin.

That's hot.

That is all.

#21 — August 11, 2004 @ 00:58AM — Mark Saleski [URL]

i have no opinion on john cusack's hotness

the duke's words are hot

dawn olsen is hot (wrapped in a mean chick's costume)

i thought jerry maquire was kinda lame...except for ms. zellweger

also, dawn olsen is the reason i became a blogcritic...so it's all her fault!!

#22 — August 11, 2004 @ 08:11AM — Eric Olsen

the hotness of Dawn transcends time and space and happens to exactly fit my receptors like an allergen, or a puzzle piece, AND STUFF.

#23 — August 11, 2004 @ 14:03PM — Dawn

I will not argue with any of that, 'cept that John Cusack is indeed HOT.

That is all.

#24 — August 11, 2004 @ 16:48PM — Aaron, Duke De Mondo [URL]

oh, Bob, the Duke is the last person to be getting all pedantic, but it was alejandro amenabar who made Open Your Eyes, what went on to become Vanilla Sky, not almadovar.
Amenabar folowed it up with the wonderful Nicole Kidman spook-fest The Others.
