Dave Matthews Band: Free Concert at Golden Gate Park Benefit Various Charities

You know, I am a middling Dave Matthews Band fan, but the guy sure does seem to have the right kind of social conscience: instead of preaching and whining all the damn time, he gives of himself on an ongoing, generous basis. And the band does too, of course:

On Sunday, Sept. 12, Dave Matthews Band will perform a free concert in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Benefiting causes including Bay Area parks, music education and AIDS research, donations raised in connection with the concert will be distributed through the band's Bama Works Foundation.

Gates open at 1 p.m. The concert will be presented by Budweiser True Music and produced by Another Planet Entertainment.

"We are so excited to finish our summer tour in San Francisco," said Dave Matthews Band. "The Bay Area has always been one of our favorite places to play, so to come here and perform in such a special location and raise money for local charities at the same time is especially rewarding."

Dave Matthews Band has sold more than 33 million albums worldwide and earns a spot on each year's list of top concert draws. Bama Works Foundation, established by the band in 1999, has donated millions of dollars in grants to a variety of organizations in Charlottesville, Va., and around the world. Beneficiaries have included the Amazon Rain Forest, community parks, youth community clubs and schools. Last summer, Dave Matthews Band gave a historic benefit concert in Central Park, raising more than $2 million for New York City's parks and public schools.

"Dave Matthews Band is the group that music fans want to see perform in-person, and we're excited to help give them an up-close and personal experience by connecting them with the band in a special setting," said Mike Sundet, Budweiser brand manager, Anheuser-Busch, Inc.

...General admission tickets are free and will be available online through the band's Warehouse Fan Association and davematthewsband.com. Dave Matthews Band is encouraging donations to Bay Area charities when fans request their tickets. A limited number of tickets will be distributed to adults 21 years and older through Budweiser promotions at local bars and clubs and through local radio stations. Additional information about tickets is available at davematthewsband.com or budweiser.com.

I like their music and not their politics. But they don't shove it down our throats, so they get a pass.

Since I live on the east coast, I could not attend the concert, but I'm sure it was fantastic. I love that the band has a social conscience; I was very pleased when I saw them play at Live 8 in 2005. Keep on rockin' guys!
