Are you familiar with "Where do you go to my lovely?" by Peter Sarstedt? The lyrics mention him by name, in a slightly mocking vein. The lyrics of this song, by the way, are taut and have more than just a pathos to them; there's a searing indictment there of much of what we consider 'valuable' nowadays. In any case, he was fairly influential on the jazz and chanson scenes in France for a while. His music isn't easily available -- even over at Amazon most of the CDs are imports. I don't think he really ever got into the mainstream (as in on the charts) and certainly I never knew of his US TV show (which is not saying a whole lot, since I'm in India!)
