the Dead & Allman Brothers at the Gorge
Published July 10, 2004
If you are wondering what the Dead look or sound like (and you should), they are going to be on Jay Leno on July 20th. I have also consistently heard from folks that this year's band kicks major ass over last year's band (which was the first year of the official reformation of the band since Jerry's death). The difference being last year they didn't have Warren, and instead had Joan Osbourne on vocals. If you remember how much Donna Jean oversang on everything... you can imagine how that went.
Sadly though, all this blogging (and some of the mushrooms) have clouded my judgement. As I write this, I wonder: What would the Duke have thought? I've been gone for two weeks, so haven't written much for y'all. However, I am sure there will be much coming forth now that I am safe back in my lair. btw... I am afraid to look at my Clinton book post. Lemme guess, Barger freaked out all over it, didn't he?

Having seen The Dead at the Gorge twice now, The Other Ones once and Phish six times there, but having never made it to the legendary Red Rocks I guess I'm glad that you think so highly of The Gorge. It is quite the amazing spot isn't it? And the campground is so relaxed.
You didn't seem to appreciate Joan in last year's version, but having only seen the penultimate show of the tour at the Gorge I personally thought she did a great job. Certainly better in tune than Donna back in the day and singing some great tunes: Alligator, Caution, Sugaree, and great vocalizing in Tommorow Never Knows and Space. Warren's awesome, but I kinda like having some feminine energy up there with the boys.

The only true place to see a live band is Broken Spoke in Austin, Texas. A truly good live music venue should have gas heaters and leaky roofs - and Broken Spoke most certainly has those.
