Police Academy Deja Vu

According to the Hollywood Reporter, we have yet another example of producers who can't seem to stop regurgitating the lame hits of the past. This time, it's Police Academy:

After a decade's absence from the big screen, Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow are teaming up to co-finance the eighth sequel in the popular franchise, which went on to spawn two television series and a worldwide stunt show. Warners-based Jerry Weintraub is on board to produce, and series creator Paul Maslansky is executive producing with Village Roadshow's Bruce Berman. The project is out to writers, with the exact direction of the newest installment yet to be determined. "I felt it was time to start again," said Maslansky, who came up with the idea of reviving the franchise. He took the idea to Berman, who then pitched it to Warners. "I saw that 'Starsky & Hutch' and a number of other revivals were doing really well. 'Police Academy' has such a great history. I thought, 'Why not?' "

Some people's idea of "great" is obviously different than others. Somebody must've been listening to those calls for a Steve Guttenberg career revival . . .

Regurgitating? Isn't that how birds feed their young? Do you think Hollywood is populated by some alien bird-like species?

Are they gonna get Michael Winslow? Because if they don't get Michael Winslow, there is no point to this project.

Thank you Mark, that was all that needed to be said.

Actually, the only way to make a new
Police Academy funny is to use nothing but fresh faces. The movies are really just sketch comedy in disguise, anyway. And if Saturday Night Live can keep changing its cast, well...
