Over the Rhine - Eve
Published July 08, 2004
I am so excited today! "Eve" arrived last night and she's beautiful. How often does such a beauty come into your life? She's rippin' right now, listen to that vunderbar humb. I am no officially "into" out of print awesome CD's, and I'm looking for a few Over the Rhine albums, and few pre-Alison Krauss produced Nickel Creek albums. If you have any leads let me know!
Eve came out in 1994, which is the same year Kurt Cobain suicided, so the grunge/alternative scene had been going strong for a good 3 or 4 years at that point. There is a noticable detectable influence from the instrument saturated genre, compared to their more vocal, less "loud" later music. Several of the lyric sheets can be interpreted in a very spiritual manner.
Happy with Myself
The disc opens with the peppy poppy "Happy with Myself" which is actually self-degrading if you pay attention.
I'm happy with myself I'm happy with myself and I don't have what it takes to please youI've been trying to write you a letter
I've been trying for two or three years
maybe I could just say it better
practice some in front of a mirror here ohI've been trying to build you a heaven
crowns of thorns in Mason Jars
angels that dance on pins and needles
maybe I've tried a little too hard oh
Within Without
One song that could be an excellent alternative view on the messiah comes from Within Without. The gentle loud guitar, almost metal, and movin' bass/percussion accompanyment round out the core of the vocals. A synthesizer brings in an interesting twist.
is it because I cannot see you that you feel so free to steal my excess baggage full of darkness and despair while I fumble with my locks you're content to stand and knock yet I know your knack for thievery is raredo you know they call it arson
setting fires without permission
in my heart for sure and maybe elsewhere too
though your lack of inhibition
captures my imagination
I end up a wiser person thanks to youit's coming to fruition
the sympathetic vibration
your train is at my station
within withoutthen there is your flare for murder
there's a dagger in the border
of your cloak and I suspect a captain's gun
as you put to death suspicions
kindly kill my fears as well
exorcise and slay the demons one by onethough I'm usually pacifistic
you are mercifully sadistic
and I didn't know that murder could be good
but the roses came crimson
springing from the prison
of the floorboards where there once were stains of bloodit's coming to fruition
the sympathetic vibration
your train is at my station
within without
it's calming my suspicion
with soothing intuition
your train is at my station
within without
within without
within without
within without
Should
"Should" shows off Karen's voice, but keeps the instruments in the foreground.
bone dryshould I never dance
like Salome danced
bathing in rain
and moonlight and flame
should I never sweat
surreal shadows
rushing through my veins
good red blood run redbone dry
should I never speak
the wisdom of hands
should I never use
the fingers that find
should I never read
the words on my feet
leading me to you
the blind lead the blind
