Apathy or Suckiness???
Published June 29, 2004
On Saturday night, I saw one of my favourite comedians, Rick Bronson. Always a great show and Saturday's show was no exception. Always full of energy and always with a quick thing to say. His dialogue is comes so quickly and is so overwhelming (in the good way) that it's always feels bizarre how he finishes his club shows. When he performs on TV or at colleges, he always ends with a very elaborate and hilarious magic trick. However, he ends his club shows with a speech about supporting Canadian talent before they feel they have no choice but to go to the U.S. While I agree with him, it's only up to a certain point.
While I agree that we should support Canadian entertainment, I don't think we should support it if it sucks. I'm not going to watch a crappy third-rate program with a horrible plot and awful acting while I can watch 'Law & Order' or 'The Simpsons'. The last Canadian TV show that I really enjoyed was 'Due South', which has been off TV for quite a while. Since then, other Canadian shows have come and gone...with good reason. They've sucked. 'The Holmes Show', 'The City', and 'Open Mike with Mike Bullard' were awful shows. Ok, Mike Bullard had his moments, but when he got unbelievably cocky two years in, he seemed less interesting than the rainbow bars that the station play at the end of the broadcast day. The only interesting show in years has been the "smash-hit" 'Corner Gas', a comedy on the CTV network. I'll admit, the show has it's moments and it prolly one of the better sitcoms on all of network television. With that said, however, there aren't that many sitcoms that are any good and 'Corner Gas' is tough for me to keep watching; it's not funny enough and interesting to watch every week. With the choice that satellite TV provides, there's no reason for me to settle for sub-par programming.
