The Expos Conspiracy
Published June 26, 2004
My friend John and I were talking about the Expos last night; lamenting on the past and what the future could have held. Who knows now really and the only thing we can do at this point is to say our what ifs because there won't be what's going to happen in the future.
I found this interesting article from the Las Vegas Sun and have discovered some interesting details about the Expos situation. Something that disappoints me very much. It looks like that the Expos will have to stay at least one more season. Why can't they be put out of their misery?
According to the lawsuit injunction filed in U.S. District Court in Florida by the former minority owners of the Expos, the judge in the case ordered Major League Baseball to notify her 90 days prior to any sale or relocation attempt to move the Montreal franchise. There is no mention in the article of any notification attempt by MLB nor could I find any on the Internet, but that's not to say there has been has been done without anyone's knowledge other than MLB commissioner Bud Selig and the judge in the case; although I believe that Selig not only would have told the media that he has notified the judge, he would have been bragging about it and declaring one step closer to victory.
However, if the judge has yet to be notified, this screws up Selig's plans to have a decision made to move the team prior before the July 13th All-Star game. Some believe the minority owners lawsuit and forthcoming injunction if indeed MLB attempts to move the team are completely screwing up the displacement of the team. With the roadblocks in place, it is not very easy for MLB to move the team.
Problem solved. We can all rest easy because the Expos will wilt away in Montreal until Olympic Stadium collapses under it's own weight. Or is the story over? That's my question. Actually I have two very important questions:
1) Is it Major League Baseball's intention of moving the team at all? Two years ago, they bought the team from former owner Jeffrey Loria with the intention of contracting the team to extinction. At point of sale, there was no immediate future for the Montreal franchise other than to be banished as a footnote in history of MLB. So when Expos survived their impending doom when the players union and MLB signed a labour agreement with the stipulation that there was to be no contraction of any team before 2006, no one knew what to do with the orphaned franchise. So the "attempt" to move the team was put forward.
