INXS choose new singer via TV show
Published June 15, 2004
CMU: reports the following bit of odd reality TV news. Its the opportunity of a life time but would you really want to fill the shoes of Hutchence?
Talking of reality TV, our idle speculation in yesterday's Daily that INXS were likely to be the band that feature in a new TV search for a rock frontman seems to be true. The new show - Rock Star - will search for the ultimate frontman. The winner will then get to tour the world with the Australian band.INXS have utilised a number of different frontmen since the death of Michael Hutchence in 1997 - including Terence Trent D'Arby and Jon Stevens - but none have stayed with the band on a permanent basis.
Explaining their motivation to find a frontman through the Rock Star show INXS guitarist Tim Farriss told reporters yesterday: "After Michael died we wanted to search the world for a new singer but didn't know how we could effectively do that. But we've now found a fantastic way to make that happen."
The show's producer Mark Burnett revealed the show was actually INXS's idea: "I am a long-time fan of INXS and feel very fortunate that they approached us with this idea and have entrusted us with their future. There's room on TV for more than one great music-based show, and I feel that rock music has been totally left out of that mix."
Rock Star will air on US TV in 2005. Unlike the Pop Idol format, decisions on who should go forward in the competition will be made as much by the band and music industry professionals as by viewers.

INXS - pack it in already! You peaked artistically about twenty years ago with The Swing and Kick and ever since then, you've been on a downward slide to mediocrity. So, retire already and let the spotlight shine on lesser known talent.
Triniman.
This is essentially a fill-in position with an oldies band - they aren't recording anything that comes out outside of Australia. There isn't all that much at stake here.

I love the show. I think it is humane to the artists and the group. Surprise for me is Dave Navarro. I don't know his music or much about him but his respectful attitude appreciation for the craft is astounding. Please Inxs don't let the producer talk any of you in to becoming mean spirited for conflict ratings. Your show is great just the way it is. Thank you and Dave for how much you understand music, the choices for songs how the eliminatio rounds are done the comments you all make the workshops and how you know the craft.
Although I didn't want to watch the show, I did anyway out of curiousity. Then, I got hooked.
However, the show has endeared me to INXS in a way I didn't expect. I find them to be professional, courteous, and encouraging. Their feedback isn't mean.
I also like the inclusion of having the least polled singers sing INXS songs. If they can't sing an INXS song, then they should be gone. It is, after all, songs they will be playing around Australia.
Currently, I'm rooting for Mig and Jordis.

Huh, maybe Van Halen will be next.
