Single Review: Hilary and Haylie Duff's "Our Lips Are Sealed"

Hilary Duff and her older, significantly less attractive sister, Haylie, have done a remake of one of the great songs of the '80s: "Our Lips Are Sealed" by the Go-Go's. Hilary has a new movie coming out (A Cinderella Story) and this song is part of the soundtrack which is slated for release on July 13. The video is available at MTV.com.
Now, I'm one of the few people in the adult world who admit to liking some Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson videos, so I know blonde teen schlock when I see it and this? This isn't even schlock. It's crap, pure and simple. Terrible.
First problem? The arrangement is awful - kind of techno pop and slow. It's like when my old cassettes would drag.
Second problem? Hilary ain't no Belinda Carlisle and Haylie ain't no Jane Wiedlen. These two can't sing together, there is no harmony whatsoever and neither did justice to the original. It's awful.
Third? The video also features snippets of Hilary's upcoming movie. If she had ANY credibility, it was totally shot when the first clip was shoved in my face.
Fourth? The video director evidently has a sister-sex fetish. The last minute of the video is nothing but the two of them hugging, spalshing each other with water and suds, touching and even a close up of them holding hands. Keeping in mind that Hilary is all of 17, that makes it even more disturbing.
They? Should have kept their lips sealed.

Isn't there something really gross and predatory to you about Hillary Duff, Lindsay Lohan and the Olsen trolls? I find it quite disturbing the way this society is aiming to make girls sexy before their 18th birthdays. Not that this is on topic totally with your post... but...
I don't like Hilary Duff or find her cute, but I don't think she's been marketed with any sexuality at all, really. Whoever handles her seems to have pretty good boundaries about making her seem "cool" to kids without being sleazy. That's why pre-teens are buying Hilary Duff and Olsen Twins merchandise and records but not Britney Spears anymore. Britney started out with sex as her big gimmick; so did Christina, to some extent. People in marketing can tell you that pre-teens have sort of turned away from the overt sexuality of the "pop tarts" and that the record sales of said "pop tarts" are declining. This probably correlates with the statistics on teen sexual behavior which indicate kids are having sex later, having safer sex, getting pregnant less often, getting less abortions, and are more willing to draw boundaries on what kind of sex is acceptable.
I haven't heard the song, but I think that's a good song to cover. The Go Go's are kind of cool in a girl-pop kind of way. I haven't seen the video so I don't know if it's dirty dirty incest. I'm sure they've stripped away much of what made the original song good.
Lohan's hotter and she seems to be regarded as more of a sex symbol than the others you've mentioned. She screams spoiled rich brat from a controlling family to me, and not just because of Mean Girls, which is actually a very good movie. The Olsen Twins make their billions from pre-teens, but they won't cross over into an adult audience no matter how hard they try. Their movie bombed, they're NOT hot (contrary to popular belief) because they look like monkeys, and they're terrible actors.

I think you should be more objective in your analysis of Hilary Duff. If you judge her as an adult she falls short because she is a kid. My twelve year old daughter thinks Hilary is great. Her music is clean, she's not a tramp like some other pop stars and she is a very positive role model for young girls. She is a cute girl who doesn't try to be something she's not. So many young stars including Christina and Britney had breast enhancement surgery before they were 18 to be more sexy, Hilary is simply happy with who she is.

I personally think Hilary Duff looks kind of dumb, but I know she's a good girl at heart; then again, that's why I think she's such a mommy's girl. We are all opposed to our own opinions, talentless or not, Hilary Duff could be a really great person, she may not be. But not everyone out there is so I suggest you just leave it alone. I don't know how some people can sit here and say such horrible things about Hilary Duff... just because your not a fan doesnt mean shes as horrible as you think. What bugged me about the song more than the quality of the performances is that they didn't change the arrangement even one tiny bit from the original. I hate cover songs that include no original input at all. It's just depressing.
If you want to hear a good, alternative take on the Go-Gos classic, seek out the live version performed by Belinda Carlisle and Fun Boy Three (it may actually predate the Go-Gos version since the Go-Gos started as backup singers for The Special. The arrangement is clever and different and it's just as fun to listen to.
The only good thing about it is that it turned my 12 year old daughter on to the Go Gos with the result that she sought out some of their other songs for her new iPod.
