Bond Tunes: How About Just "Best"?

When I bought Maroon 5's "Songs About Jane," I thought that was the best album I'd ever purchased. Little did I know how wrong I would be.

Tonight I found a long-lost CD case, and therefore, uncovered some long-last CD's. Apart from a few video games, I found a music disc I'd been looking for for ages!

The Best Of Bond... James Bond 007

That's right! My all-time favourite CD is a compilation album! This disc contains all of the 007 films' theme music from the original Monty Norman Orchestra hit up to Garbage's enthralling single "The World Is Not Enough" for film of same name. There are a few techno remixes thrown in for good measure.

My tastes in music are wide and varied, and this album caters to nearly all of them. For my upbeat rock moods, there's Duran Duran's "A View To A Kill" and Paul McCartney & Wings' "Live And Let Die". For great vocals there's "Goldfinger" and "Diamonds Are Forever" (both by the amazing Shirley Bassey), Tom Jones' "Thunderball", and Matt Monro's excellent rendition of "From Russia With Love". And if I'm in one of my common musical moods - uptempo, light love tunes - there's nearly an unlimited selection. ("All Time High", "Nobody Does It Better", and et cetera, ad happiness). Oh, and a-Ha's "The Living Daylights" rocks the sha-hizzle. Word up. (Comes the morning, and the headlights fade away...) Oh sorry.

All in all, THIS CD ROCKS! Go. Buy. IT!

I actually can't tell if this post is sarcastic or just ridiculous.

#2 — June 7, 2004 @ 06:59AM — BRICKLAYER

I too, love upbeat rock music.

I am going to guess it is sarcasm, but frankly, I don't know. I like some cheesy CD's too. I have decided I am going to stop apologizing for the cheesy shit that I listen to.

Hall and Oates rule, and it isn't my fault!

I see not a hint of sarcsm here, don't have the slightest idea why such a collection would be considered cheesy, and am quite perplexed by the number of comments of late asking something to effect of "is this a joke?"

No, it's not a joke. I resent the dismissive implications, and would appreciate some other method be used to convey disagreement.

"That's right! My all-time favourite CD is a compilation album!"

This is what I thought sounded sarcastic. And after a disjointed statement about Maroon 5. I don't know. I like Maroon 5 and I also like Live and Let Die among other Bond songs. I just didn't know if this was serious or not.

Maybe I am just dumb today?

I was thinking more about the first comment, in which the isue was raised and the question posed. As far as Ican tell, it's just a way of dismissively disagreeing without having to defend one's position.

My fave soundtacks:

The Royal Tenenbaums
Last American Virgin
Rushmore
Clueless
Ghostdog
Godmoney
Field of Dreams
Braveheart
Planet of the Apes
Some Kind of Wonderful

I think my all-time fave is Heat.

Anything that dude from Devo touches is golden.

My favorites which come to mind first are:

Singles
Good Will Hunting
City of Angels

#11 — June 7, 2004 @ 12:18PM — Eric Olsen

now for just plain great collections of songs it's hard to beat American Graffiti, Animal House, and The Big Chill

One of my favorite soundtracks (simply because of the 2 Letters to Cleo cover songs) would be
10 Things I Hate About You.

And yeah, I don't see what's so cheesy about a Bond Compilation. I always thought it was an honor for a musician to be asked to do a Bond song. By the way, absololutely love "The World Is Not Enough" by Garbage (then again, I love anything from them).

Was The Big Chill soundtrack better than the movie? I felt like the movie was an older version of St. Elmo's Fire, which incidentally also had a couple good songs on the soundtrack.

Crap nuts. I've been having quite the bad luck with BC lately. Triple posted thanks to some weird error each time I submitted my comment. Sorry.

I saw Garbage open up for the pumpkins in 1998 I think. Shirley Manson made me a garbage fan. She is absolutely stunning in person.

#19 — June 7, 2004 @ 12:32PM — Eric Olsen

the soundtrack is totally solid, no filler whatsoever, and I think the movie is way better than the icky St Elmo's Fire, but maybe it was the time and place - it's a real jolt to hear them compared

#20 — June 7, 2004 @ 12:38PM — visualsimplicity [URL]

No doubt Shirley is stunning. She rocks too. Last time I saw them live, she wasn't feeling too well, so she just said f-it with the stage list and took requests the whole night from the audience. That was quite a sight, seeing and hearing her sing songs that she hadn't done in half a decade and forgetting half the lyrics (eg. Queer where she just hummed parts she didn't remember).

Anyway, another good soundtrack that comes to mind is The Craft (and I never even saw the movie--but once again Letters to Cleo was part of this album--I'd have to rank them up there as one of the best soundtrack bands of their time).

#21 — June 7, 2004 @ 12:40PM — Craig Lyndall [URL]

Well, I liked St. Elmo's fire, but I haven't seen it in about 5 years which means I saw St. Elmo when I was 20. I also saw The Big Chill around the same time. That might explain it because I don't think The Big Chill was aimed at 20-somethings.

#22 — June 7, 2004 @ 12:42PM — Eric Olsen

It WAS aimed at 20-somethings in 1982, who are now 40-somethings

#23 — June 7, 2004 @ 12:59PM — BRICKLAYER

Hey Craig, I forgot about "Singles"! That's a great one. 2 great Westerberg tracks on there.

#24 — June 7, 2004 @ 13:17PM — Craig Lyndall [URL]

That album made me a Westerberg fan. Also, Drown by the Pumpkins is one of their best songs ever.

#25 — June 7, 2004 @ 13:22PM — Andrew Quinn [URL]

No sarcasm here, I assure you!
I was being totally sincere.
