Venus envy

No living person on Earth has ever witnessed the transit of Venus across the Sun, although many dead people have, since it happens every 122 years, but tomorrow a handful of lucky souls will be able to say it was the last thing they ever saw before going permanently blind.

Even knowing the risks, millions of morons are expected to do their best to burn out their retinas, though most will fail on account of clouds. Otherwise it's the don't-miss event of the century for people who crave disappointment. Me, I'll load the jpgs.

Where Singapore will see the transit at sunset, then have a nice dinner, maybe a stick of illegal chewing gum, followed by a 17-hour wait in the ER, the people of Charleston, SC, on America's east coast, are not expected to yank themselves out of bed at sunrise on a weekend after a night of heavy drinking and deliberately look into the sun.

Most people in the Americas won't have a chance in hell of seeing it anyway, and they're the ones with all the envy. The rest of us could care less, or is it couldn't? Either way, I always thought it meant sour grapes. Which I also never understood.

Love that Venus, don't get me wrong. I saw The Day After Tomorrow last night, or was it the night before? I've been kind of blah ever since.

And to all those who have been patiently waiting for the "Pagina" joke, here it is.

What about my favorite Venus? She would definitely block out the sun and the moon. I once thought of having her image painted on my car, but legal precedents got in the way.

I once heard Ray Charles talk about his memories of what he saw before he went blind. He said that he remembered staring up into the sun.

Do you suppose that those pinhole shoebox camera things will work?

what about looking through a CD at it, like with the eclipse?
