Soliciting Donations - The Price of "Success"

With heavy heart I must state that the time has come to ask our much appreciated readers to - if they feel so inclined - contribute, to help defray the increasing costs of bringing Blogcritics.org to you.

Due to the "success" of the site - mainstream media attention, traffic increasing by the day, now over 460 writers, a fully searchable archive of over 16,000 stories, over 60,000 comments, and the complexity of an operation to accomodate all of this - we have had to greatly upgrade the server on which we reside, with a very large increase in cost, to met our ever-expanding needs. And as we have grown, all of our other expenses have risen as well, leaving us with no choice but to ask for your help. We hope you understand.

We are happy to accept donations in any amount with kind thanks - other methods of helping us out remain buying Amazon items that you see at the bottom of every story, and stocking up on super cool guy Blogcritics.org merchandise available here.

Without the support of our readers and writers, none of this would be possible or necessary - thanks again and we hope you know how appreciated you are.

Finally, our writers contribute to Blogcritics.org out of the goodness of their hearts, please help them out by visiting their home sites by clicking on the writer's name at the top and bottom of every post, and don't forget the Blogcritic of the Day, featured in the spotlight box at the top of the front page of the site.

We look very much forward to doing the best we can to make Blogcritics a better, more interesting, informative and amusing place to visit every day - thanks again to you all.

I must decline. As long as practices such as ripping off copyrighted material verbatim (persons seeking an example may examine the listings for RJ Elliott) and allowing Sam Vaknin to use the site in his 'medical advisor' scheme are approved of, Blogcritics is undeserving in my opinion. The best I can do is offer pro bono legal advice when media get around to suing Blogcritics over those copyright violations as they did Free Republic. Feel free to accept.

#2 — June 4, 2004 @ 11:24AM — Eric Olsen

Any other conditions - how about world peace?

#3 — June 4, 2004 @ 12:25PM — Phillip Winn

MD, remind me why you spend so much time at a site you find undeserving and are eager to help sue?

#4 — June 4, 2004 @ 12:26PM — Phillip Winn

Eric, no fair editing your own comments when nobody else can!

#5 — June 4, 2004 @ 12:36PM — Natalie Davis

World peace is a capital idea, but a bit beyond BC's abilities.

#6 — June 4, 2004 @ 12:52PM — Mark Saleski

c'mon nat! we're gonna bomb the middle east back to glass, followed by korea and then perhaps china.

all will be quiet after that. ;-)

gee, i better get on the ball and get my blogcritics coffee mug before too long...

#7 — June 4, 2004 @ 13:08PM — Craig Lyndall

Fear not fellow blogcritics. I have been thinking about world peace and I will have a solution shortly. It will be done as soon as I figure out women.

#8 — June 4, 2004 @ 17:43PM — Jim Carruthers

Well, considering she is offering a pro boner, I want to know what the pro rate blogcritics will be getting from her Ice-bergmanesque Slim pimp.

#9 — June 4, 2004 @ 19:28PM — Bob A. Booey

Your references are so weird. No one knows what the hell you're talking about, old man. This is even worse than the last one about "old Sun studio slap-back." Even Dennis Miller is funnier. Lunatic.

That is all.

#10 — June 4, 2004 @ 19:31PM — Mac Diva

Jim, is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?

#11 — June 4, 2004 @ 20:13PM — Jim Carruthers

""Slim," he had said, " A pretty Nigger bitch and a white whore are just alike. They both will get in a stable to wreck it and leave the pimp on his ass with no whore. You gotta make 'em hump hard and fast to stick 'em for long scratch quick. Slim, pimping ain't no game of love, so prat 'em and keep your swipe outta 'em. Any sucker who believe a whore loves him shouldn't a fell outta his mammy's ass.""
-- Iceberg Slim, "Pimp -- The Story of My Life"

However he doesn't mention Paypal donations or Amazon affiliates sales.

#12 — June 4, 2004 @ 20:21PM — Eric Olsen

nor brand-identified merchandise, I'd wager

#13 — June 4, 2004 @ 21:13PM — Jim Carruthers

So, does this mean you'll be getting the blogcritics.org theme song from Ice Berg Slim Whitman: "When I'm Calling You, Where's My Money, Bitch?"

(If you make this into a tee-shirt, can I at least get some credit?)

#14 — June 4, 2004 @ 23:22PM — Jim Carruthers

MacDiva writes: Jim, is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?

No, because to have a firearm, I'd have to have a certificate and registration. And I have neither, that would take about 30 to 60 days from what I understand.

Nope, just a big, throbbing, hairy, purple penis. GLAD (though they don't have anything against throbbing genitals) doesn't really enter into it. (yes, this is going into "Carry On ..." territory).

But isn't vital, throbbing, outstanding issues what Blogcritics is all about?

#15 — June 4, 2004 @ 23:39PM — RJ Elliott

"Blogcritics is undeserving in my opinion"

Says someone who spends about 14 hours a day posting here...

#16 — June 5, 2004 @ 00:15AM — Craig Lyndall

You know what? Mac Diva can have any opinion of this site that she wants. The most valuable thing she can give to this site are posts. This is the nature of a donation service and of this site. Nobody has to disclose anything, ever. Eric knows and I can guarantee he ain't telling.

#17 — June 5, 2004 @ 00:32AM — RJ Elliott

CL:

I don't care whether MD donates money or not. I am just curious why someone who holds this site in such comtempt is also one of its major (non-financial) contributors.

#18 — June 5, 2004 @ 01:57AM — Al Barger

"Major contributors" Ha! That would be somewhat like calling the heartworms "major contributors" to your dogs circulatory system.

#19 — June 5, 2004 @ 14:47PM — TDavid

Jim - talking about your "big, throbbing, hairy, purple penis" is going pretty far afield from the topic of this post: donations for PayPal, dontcha think? LOL

Then again, maybe PayPal is a sperm bank!

#20 — June 5, 2004 @ 17:01PM — Jim Carruthers

If I have to wear a gold G-string and shake my money-maker to support this site, I guess a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

However, I can't take responsibility if it goes off when I'm cleaning it.

But she did ask what was in my pocket, and I had to do my Iggy best, and head down the old highway.

#21 — June 5, 2004 @ 21:43PM — jack e. jett

i really love it that we are able to combine lawsuits, world peace and a big purple penis in one discussion.

i am feeling a hallmark movie of the week coming on.....with iggy pop playing in the background

#22 — June 6, 2004 @ 07:39AM — Shark

I too must decline.

As long as practices such as cutting and pasting news articles and breaking up those with trite, mindless, simplistic and obvious statements of 'opinion' (see MacDiva) -- and allowing her to use this site in her capacity as Cosmic Inquisitor for Anti-Racist, Neo-Confederate Slave Owners, Blogcritics is undeserving in my opinion.

The best I can do is offer pro bono legal advice when some participant sues MacDiva for the lying, libelous flood of psychotic horse-shit that flows from her disturbed pie-hole. Feel free to accept.

#23 — June 6, 2004 @ 10:02AM — Craig Lyndall

A simple, "No, I am not going to contribute." would have been fine.

#24 — June 6, 2004 @ 10:34AM — TDavid

Actually, Craig the polite thing would be to just not say anything ;)

However, Shark and Mac Diva both contribute to the site content-wise and that is a donation of their time and effort so while either of them might decline to donate in a financial way they are already donating in a content-way.

If they don't want to donate in any way then they will go away.

#25 — June 6, 2004 @ 12:07PM — Craig Lyndall

I agree with you completely TDavid. I think it is kind of funny in a Hatfields and McCoys kind of way that Shark and Diva (Two of the biggest content contributors) won't contribute financially because they oppose each other. I just love that they write here.

#26 — June 6, 2004 @ 15:27PM — Shark

jeesus, kids, once again... it was a...

oh.

nevermind.

#27 — June 6, 2004 @ 15:38PM — TDavid

Your attempts at sharkcasm fell short with this reader, sorry!

This was a serious request by Eric (doh!) for serious reasons. Mac Diva clearly wasn't joking and so it seems you were trying to take a shot at her (which is ridiculously easy to do in plenty of other threads). Ha ha, Shark! Funny, funny!

Just donate or not, but please take the petty playground BS to other threads. There's plenty of 'em to do that fighting at that you two needn't urinate all over this one.

#28 — June 6, 2004 @ 16:05PM — Shark

Oh. I see. She smears the thread with feces; I make light of that -- and I get a lecture.

Thanks, TDavid. We needed a new nanny.

#29 — June 6, 2004 @ 16:16PM — TDavid

Shark, you sound like you need a nanny, grow up. That comment was clearly meant for both of you. If you aren't going to be mature enough to suck it up and recognize what's going on at this site, then kindly take a long walk off a short pier.

#30 — June 6, 2004 @ 20:04PM — Eric Olsen

I knew it was a joke and it was pretty clearly in response to the anti-donation comment, so it is, ipso facto, a pro-donation comment.

#31 — June 6, 2004 @ 20:53PM — Shark

Of course it was pro-donation!

BTW:
I'll DONATE, I'll DONATE~!

(Only because Eric is a hunk -- and he is the only person around here who can use 'ipso facto' in casual conversation.)

PS: Y'all take Type A Negative, right?

#32 — June 6, 2004 @ 21:11PM — TDavid

I just love happy endings :)

#33 — June 8, 2004 @ 21:47PM — Eric Olsen

Thanks to all who have given generously - it is appreciated more than words can say. Don't forget, snagging some cool Blogcritics merchandise is a form of financial support as well, as is buying from Amazon through the site. Thanks again.
