"Inwasion" of the Helloween clone

Freedom Call

FC are a German band who have released their first live CD, coupled with second CD with a complete unreleased EP and 3 covers. It is not a co-incidence that one of these covers is a faithful cover of 'Dr Stein' by Helloween. FC so closely resemble Helloween as to come across like a Helloween cover band. Thier cover of 'Dancing with Tears in My Eyes' is rather amusing, a power-metal take on a classic pop track by Ultravox. The real problem is with the live material. It might have been better to stick to German as to hear some of the song intros in broken English makes it hard not to laugh. That is not to say the music on here is bad. It is merely competent power-metal of a type peddled much better by others (Helloween, Masterplan, Gamma Ray, and Edguy spring to mind). If Freedom Call want a wider audience it might help if they developed some individuality in their sound. This is not horrid by any means, just not that special.

Rating: 3/5
