Did anyone actually watch the movie? Yes, Spurlock is ripping on McD's among others for not giving consumers enough healthy choices. He also makes a great comparison of how much the major soda companies and fast food resturants advertise (billions) versus how much fruit companies do (few million). I think the stat was something like 10,000 ads a year that a kid will see from these companies (vs. roughly 1,000 meals a year with their parents). And he pounds on the fact that there are over 80 McD's in Manhattan alone.

But at the end Spurlock makes the point that food corporations have no reason to change since we are making them billions buying this junk. Spurlock's last message is that it is up to us to make these companies change their ways(i.e. personal responsibilty).

Bob, you are still new, though becoming less so all the time, so I will again instruct rather than attack: I use the words that mean what I want them to mean and that is that. "Ontological" is exactly what I meant to say regarding being within the blogosphere. One's status as a being within a given universe is exactly the meaning of ontology - any other word would have been less precise and precision is vastly more important to me than concerns about being perceived as pretentious by the lexically unsteady.

RJ:) I wish I had read your post last night. Lover was hanging by the skin of his teeth as it was. Posts from Kudd and you, might have done him in;) Now, he's done a lil' "some'ng some'ng" and he's been granted a stay of execution. He is still hanging in by the skin of his teeth....

KUDD..LOL..Believe me, I wished him dead last night. Either dead to me or dead to the world..lol. Had I read your post I might have arranged something to make "reports" accurate..but alas, he lives! Even if with my finger prints on his cheek:)

My name is Sandie Smallson and I am a cyber whore:) First I was sleeping with Lomu. Meanwhile, carrying a torch for RJ Elliott. Then came my hunk of burning lust, Kudd. Hmm.
RJ, regardless of where we may agree or disagree, I have a soft spot for you no matter what I say in those disagreements:) Hard to believe, but true:)

However, I have to sleep with Kudd too though. You know, he's the rip off clothes with a pair of scissors type lover. Sex in glass elevator and at the laundromat type of lover. I hope I can have both:)

Kudd, you did well with old headless chicken Carruthers there. He clearly has a fetish. I wouldn't let him piss on me if I was on fire. I would rather burn and die. I find him a complete closed-minded ignoramus.

You wouldn't have to make dinner for the ankle-biters, you'd just dump a 50lb bag into a trough, and after you made sure they'd got their shots, you wouldn't have to worry about raising the young'uns to harvesting weight.

Nope, not creepy, Bob, just sensible. I don't smoke, don't like smoke, and really get pissed off when people think they can pollute a sensory experience like eating and drinking because they are addicts.

Anytime you see some idjit going on about smoking in a restaurant or bar, just search and replace "smoke" for "piss" and you will see what idgits they are.

Urine is harmless, but you wouldn't think of pissing in the middle of a restaurant while people are trying to eat. So why would you think smoking in public is acceptable?

Lenny Bruce said the beginning of civilization is that we set rules where we could shit and piss. A better civilization sets rules where the addicted minority can smoke.

And a point about that Scottish restaurant, I don't eat there because their food is bad for me, I don't eat there because their food is crap. I don't like fast food because it is bad, bland food.

Sandra, if you feel free to pollute my environment with smoke, then I'm sure you won't mind me doing the same by pissing on you. Not metaphorically, literally.

After all, in a healthy human, piss doesn't contain any pathological substances, unlike cigarette smoke. And if you ingest it, it isn't addictive (unlike tobacco). Sure it makes you smell, but you obviously don't care how you smell.

I'm sure you hate yourself enough to actually enjoy a regular golden shower.

So when can we line up to piss all over you?

Olsen: I love you, sweetie, but please don't try and use the word "ontological" to be pretentious. You make a good distinction and definition, but one's status as a blogger or commenter has absolutely nothing to do with one's Being in the world or Being toward others or relation to the cosmos. Thanks.

Small but important ontological point: bloggers are the ones who write the articles in the first place that commenters then comment upon. Being a commenter does not make one a blogger, though regular commenters and all good writers are encouraged to become bloggers. Carry on.

Sandra: ROTFF*LMAO! Absofuckinglutely. We have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel as it is. Why can't they just let us live while we are alive?!

Speaking of "blackened lungs" and collapsing, I lost 6 tennis matches in a row yesterday probably because I smoked at change overs instead of eating a banana or drinking energy drinks. At the end of it, I kid you not when I tell you I was literally carried home on the back of a friend who had to substitute as a beast of burden. I could not breathe. Smoking is bad but it is so very good in so many ways. Just like Mcdonalds:)

A late apology..sorry David:) For turning your "fat" thread into a smoking campaign. I'm sure Kudd is also sorry:)

That assumes a person who orders French fries will eat the entire order no matter the size, rather than just the amount that satiates hunger.

I think that this is true in the case of McDonald's fries. Really, can you stop yourself from eating them? Have you ever thrown one away? Or do you finish every last friggin' one, including the brown little crusty one that's been stuck in the fryer basket all day and finally made it to someone's tray?

They're so damn good I've considered licking the inside of the box to get the last remnants of salt and grease into my system.

They're evil, I tell you. EVIL.

I don't think I imagine the smell of tobacco in my hair or on my clothes. I don't think I imagine the tobacco burned holes in my umbrella--a result of a smoker in a crowded concert. I don't think my friend whose face was recently burned by a carelessly waved cigarette in a crowded bar is imagining things.

It's a little more than a minor inconvenience for some of us who are asthmatic or allergic to tobacco smoke. And my friend who just hopes he isn't scarred for life. He was very gallant because the smoker was a woman.

I don't go to bars because I don't drink. So moot point for me.

Until we have a cone of silence that can come down and confine the smoky air to one particular person or place, smokers are asking non-smokers to be perfumed and exposed to tobacco very much against their will.

And as a former waitress, I think you as a smoker are expecting too much. Owners also have to consider the employee health and possible liability when they have a smoking section.

So I don't think all those non-smoking restaurants are a result of selfish non-smokers.

We do have smoking lounges where I'm at. Feel free to go and join your fellow smokers. But I prefer a smoke-free environment. It hasn't seemed to hurt the restaurant business here as was predicted to go totally non-smoking, but then again, I think we get enough smoke in our lungs every day from the Los Angeles smog.

Purple tigress, we have conceded the non-smoking planes. It is hard but we try. Even when smoking was allowed in planes, I hated the smoking area. It was too claustrophobic. I often sat elsewhere and went that way to smoke.

My point is, if you go into a pub or a bar, you've got to expect people to smoke. If you go into a restaurant you've got to expect that there is a section for smokers. Smokers eat too. The restaurants have to cater for their smoking customers. Nobody wants to spray you with smoke. You are away from us. Just as we all like it. Why can't we co-exist beautifully? Why must non-smokers insist on no smoking at all in these places? They are just being selfish.

Might I add that no female smoker worth her salt leaves her home without (1) Chewing gum. (2) Perfume and (3)scented hair spray. Number 3 is optional. 1 and 2 are a must. I think non-smokers smell cigarettes even in their dreams. They are so traumatised by the whole thing:)

JR, we refuse to stay home. If we can't fill your lungs with smoke in public restaurants, we insist on doing just that in other public places where we can find you. I encourage all non-smokers to stay home. The smokers are on the war path.

Back in the day, I would blow my smoke away from the face of people near me. I was being polite. These days, I'm so angry with the moaners I just smoke where I can and I don't give a damn. If they don't like it they can run into one of those non-smoking places they've campaigned hard for.

I understand there's a worldwide epidemic of obesity. I guess the world is really getting wide. But I wonder just where we're looking at since not everywhere has enough affluence that people can eat themselves into obesity. Oh while I understand conspiracy theorists wonder what are the real aims of McDonald's and Starbucks, I'll hazard a guess that not everywhere has both or either.

Americans are becoming obese, but if you look at what farmers used to eat for breakfast, you'll think: how could anyone eat all that without getting fat? Easy. They worked it off. Now we have cars, we have moving stairs, we have elevators and we have computers and we have a lot of lazy Americans. As the original poster pointed out, it's easy to blame someone, everyone but one's self.

I do have to admit that I can't remember the last time I was at a McDonald's. But I do eat out about once or twice a week and when I have too much food, I just save it for later.

If you cut out all the high sugar things on the suggested menu, you'd also save a lot of calories.

I also weigh myself everyday. And unlike Spurlock my average daily allowance is very, very small since I am not quite 5 feet. Some people say I have good genes, but how about I spend a lot of time doing keeping myself busy?

As for smokers...you certainly have a right to smoke. But what you don't have a right to do is to make the areas where I am eating smell like smoke or to make my hair and clothes smell of smoke. When you smoke in a public place, particularly one that is enclosed, you're doing the equivalent of running around to everyone else in the place and spraying them with your favorite perfume...without asking or caring how these people feel.

You think peanuts and allergies are a big deal on airplanes. Tobacco smoke and allergies AND asthma are also something smokers should consider. That should be reason enough NOT to smoke on international flights. I have sat next to a smoker on a flight from LA to NYC and he used hard liquor to calm his nerves. Not as effective as one would wish and it took too long from my perspective.

But I also dislike sitting next to obese people on the plane who are more than willing to take up their space and mine without a second thought.

As an added note: I worked on a farm one summer for two weeks and my family were originally farmers.

Oh dear! Kudd45:) I am flattered. I now live in fear that I will disappoint you any second from now. I guess while it's going great, let the violins keep playing:)

Tom, where are the profits skyrocketing? I am not aware of this stat in the UK. I understand non-smokers hating the smell and not wanting to die from passive smoking.

However, since you are good with stats, I suggest you actually go and CHECK the stats of people who have contacted cancer from passive smoking. Slim to none.

There is no reason why we can't have a smoking/non-smoking section. You could easily die walking out on the street and being hit by a drunk driver. Health? There are more obesed people than there are people who've got cancer from smoking. In fact, the causal link b/w smoking and cancer has not been proven beyond reasonable doubt. What about drinking? There are so many things that are bad for us. I find it hypocritical for people to go around blaming smokers and smoking for all sorts of things when in general a very low percentage of people actually die from smoking related diseases compared to other ailments.

I don't think smokers were fighting for "pull" with non-smokers. I do not see the big deal in having a smoking and non-smoking area. How does my smoking upstairs or in another corner of a restaurant affect your life as a non-smoker in a completely different part of the restaurant? Any non-smoker who advocates such strict rules just has control issues and needs to get over it. I am thankful that we haven't gone completely mad in Europe. In Italy you can still smoke in some shoe shops:) and in a majority of restaurants round Europe you can still smoke.

I have found myself a new favourite restaurant. I love it. You can smoke inside and the non-smokers have to sit outside..LOL. Since they love fresh air so much they might as well sit outside. It must be owned by a smoker. Again, smokers unite:)

I have decided to boycott those non-smoking restaurants and I am not the only one. Smokers unite:) The restaurants will soon start to feel the pinch.

You go right ahead if that makes you somehow feel good. Do it knowing that non-smokers are filling up the seats you abandon. Many restaurants here are voluntarily going non-smoking and have found that their sales have skyrocketed - yes, that's right, the doomsday the smokers all think is headed for their favorite venues is precisely and fantastically NOT happening! This is a wonderful turn of events. Finally non-smokers actually have some pull. So you go right on ahead and boycott - it frees up another seat for people who care about their health.

SANDRA!!!!!

You are my new favorite blogger!!!

Boycotting the non-smoking restaurants is something i've been doing for two years, and i've encouraged others to do so also but we seem to be fighting a losing battle. Nevertheless i will not be detered. WTF is the world coming to. I flew to Japan 2 years ago and thats what helped me begin my battle. 14 hours without a smoke, COME ON! thats just ridiculous. im fine on airplanes, but imagine those who aren't, how traumatizing to be scared to death and not be able to smoke! Fuck that!

I couldn't agree more with everything you've said here and i greatly appreciate someone being aware of these things.

P.S. i might be falling in love with you, lol
