Interview with Toby Morrell of Emery
Published May 26, 2004
[Toby Morrell] We met him when we moved to Seattle and he needed a job. He actually had never played keys before so on stage he is actaully mad at how hard it is to play the piano and takes his frustrations out by smashing the keyboard.
[Craig] What were some of the highlights from the tour with The Beautiful Mistake, etc.?
[Toby Morrell] We made the most friends ever.
[Craig] I know you guys are very open about your faith. Please tell me a little bit about the relationship of your faith to your music.
[Toby Morrell] We feel that no matter what our songs are about, that they can honor God.
[Craig] Onstage in Cleveland you talked for a moment about your faith and said something like, "We aren't up here to say that we are right and anyone else is wrong, but that we should all be friends, because that is what it's all about anyway. Right?"
[Toby Morrell] Well we talk about our faith and what it is to us and hopefully that plants a seed so people want to know more about God. We don't want people to feel pressured though or forced to believe the way we do because that's not real faith in God. We want to try and love everyone no matter what.
[Craig] How do you decide what you should and shouldn't say onstage when dealing with such a divisive topic as personal beliefs?
[Toby Morrell] Trust God
[Craig] A lot of bands I have seen this year have tried to tell audiences how to vote in elections, and fought for other causes including a lot of politically charged topics. How do you feel about other kinds of topical subject matter in music like politics?
[Toby Morrell] I think it's good. People need to be stretched and do more than just scoot through life. But you should honestly study and decide for yourself what is true. Don't believe in Christ because some dumb band says to, or vote for someone because it's the popular thing to do. Look into things and you will find the truth.
[Craig] Any predictions for the rest of this year?
[Toby Morrell] Lot's of time in the van, Green Bay Packers, the best team ever, will win the super bowl.
I don't know much about the football pick, but you can catch the band on various tours in the coming year. Keep up to date with their travels at the Band's Website or at the website Recording Label.
