Supersize Me

Throughout the film, Spurlock interviews a fascinating group of individuals who are, one way or another, part of the debate surrounding the fast food industry: a lanky gentleman who has eaten at least 2 Big Macs a day for more than a decade (and still boasts a healthy cholesterol level of 140); Jared Fogel, the formerly fat Subway spokesman who is famous for dropping more than 200 pounds by eating the chain's sandwiches everyday; an obese man who drinks nearly two gallons of soda a day, and who is preparing to undergo gastric bypass surgery; John Robbins, the heir to the Baskin-Robbins ice cream empire, who openly blames his father's terrible health on excessive ice cream consumption; and even a Southern lunch lady who provides an up-close look at the crap American school children are shoving down their fat little gullets. Each subject uses his or her personal experiences to support the film's primary claim that, in the simplest terms possible, the fast food industry is a rich, uncaring bully intent on turning us into a nation of fatasses.

Questioning the premise of the film is easy; obviously, McDonald's doesn't expect people to eat at their restaurants three times a day. Spurlock's mega-caloric binge is simply a shock-technique used to lure moviegoers into the theater. And Spurlock himself readily admits that the experiment takes things to the extreme, but, to the film's credit, the thrust of the documentary examining the fast food industry as a whole stands up well on its own, even without the subplot of some dude fattening himself up like a Thanksgiving turkey by gorging on Egg McMuffins and chocolate shakes.

If you enjoy documentaries in the vein of Michael Moore's recent work, where arguably one-sided information is presented in a colorful and entertaining manner, you'll probably enjoy Supersize Me. But heed my warning: before you attend the film, go eat one last Big Mac extra value meal, because after this film, you may never want to eat fast food again.

I am desperately trying to figure out why a blog on the movie "Supersize Me" has a picture of Michael Moore at the top, along with the title of his movie.

The only thing I can figure is that Mr. Moore is being used as the perfect example of what one will look like after a lifetime of fast food. Now THAT paints a picture, and not a very pretty one either.
