Last week, Rockefeller Center got the go-ahead from the New York State Supreme Court to install metal detectors near the exclusive elevators for Rainbow Room guests.

Cipriani Fifth Avenue, the company now running the legendary restaurant - I've been there, and it's indeed exquisite, especially on a snowy winter night - objected to the metal detectors, as well as the increasingly aggressive pat-down searches and frisking of all patrons before they are allowed into the elevators.

The company said delays on crowded evenings, caused by the requirement that all guests remove elaborate jewelry and cuff links and empty purses and briefcases before passing through the metal detectors, lasted up to an hour.

Justice Debra A. James wrote in her decision that Rockefeller Center, the landlord, had every right to put in place such security measures as it deemed necessary.
