American Idol - Big Band
Published May 05, 2004
In a marked departure from previous weeks, AI3 took on the music of the big bands last night. While singing the songs of Gloria Estefan last week proved most challenging for the remaining finalists, this theme was even more difficult. Once again, no one singer was particularly well-suited to the style, and, thus, they all had to make do with what they had. The evening was made even more challenging for the five contestants because, for the first time, they each had to sing two songs. All five rose to the challenge and delivered an overall round of solid performances.
THE WINNERS
George started off with Cheek to Cheek and the difference from the past few weeks was immediately apparent. This is the George we've come to know and love. What put his performance over the top, for me, was his second number, an amazing rendition of What a Wonderful World. While I admit it is one of my favorite songs, George did justice to the composer and the many great singers who've taken it on before him. This was the first time this season I actually got goosebumps listening to one of the contestants sing. If LaToya and Fantasia continue to steal votes from each other, George could actually make it through to the end.
By now, we know that LaToya is a classy, talented singer. My complaint about her since the competition began was her inability to show emotion and open up. We finally got just a hint of her personality last week, but tonight she was warm and inviting, allowing the audience in to enjoy the performance along with her. She delivered two solid performances: Too Close for Comfort and Don't Rain On My Parade, and got two standing ovations from the audience. She's still my favorite to win, though between her and George, it's close.

Funny how LaToya is now your "Favorite for a long time", when you earlier said it would be an injustice if Fantasia doesn't win.
I think your AI blogs should have in the by line:
Scott "Bandwagon" Pepper.
Thanks Scott.
Raging Critic/Interesting Note/AIRocks/Pappy: Where does Scott say that LaToya was been his favorite "for a long time"?
"Everyone knows"? That statement is debatable; in fact, it is patently untrue.
"She's still my favorite to win"
See!!! Scott says Latoya is STILL his favorite to win, when for many weeks he's been saying he thinks Fantasia will win and wants her to win. As soon as Fantasia slips, he's all over Latoya. Thus he is deserving of the bandwagon comment.
I know who Raging Critic is, but I'm not that person (but I enjoy his takes!). Nor am AIRocks. I don't even know who Pappy is. I've been reading Scott's AI analyses for a while and I am sick of the bias and bandwagoning. Is that so wrong?
If he is so "biased" towards Fantasia, why did he begin with "Fantasia is a great singer and a great performer, no doubt. But I think her attitude may be a little off-putting to some people." Completely admitting that she is definitely a love her or hate her type performer. I think Fantasia's great because she's unique, however her props to Hudson and Stevens just need to go, we all know that you aren't sad the others are gone, you're happy you're still in the competition - it's transparent even though I'm sure they all truly love one another by now ;). The review wasn't biased, it gave an accurate account of each performer and also noted at the beginning that they all gave solid performances, which they all SHOULD now that we're getting down to it, so it is going to be harder to predict and judge.
I don't like Fantasia's attitude "on TV" -- she might be a great person to meet and know in person, but how she has portrayed herself on American Idol (the lame tributes to other contestants for example), definitely leave a sour taste in my mouth.
The other four have behaved themselves much better and more respectably and are more likeable IMO than Fantasia.
In fact, of the remaining five contestants Fantasia is the only one I want not to win, but only because of her attitude, not because of her voice. The reason being is that I could see her getting snobby with fans.
I can't fault Fantasia in the vocals department though, she is a good singer and worthy of winning the competition on those merits.
And what was up with the Big Band show? The only thing spectacular about that show last night was the band. Paula looked like she had gone to the makeup room five times instead of once ... way too much makeup Paula! And the crying thing at the end seemed contrived to this viewer anyway.
Let's get a 60's, 70's or 80's rock night ... something closer to the dates most of us grew up with musically. I don't know how many seniors even watch American Idol? Anybody else aware of the demographics?
I said on February 24 after LaToya made it into the finals:
And, my early prediction for the whole competition: LaToya London. Until we see something positively mind-blowing, she's got this one wrapped up all the way to the end.
On March 15 after we knew the top 12, I gave LaToya 2:1 odds to win, over Fantasia at 3:1.
On April 22 with 6 finalists left, I flipped the odds for Fantasia over LaToya.
I think Fantasia has a better shot to win, but I prefer LaToya's voice and style. As I said above, the top 3 will be very hard to call.
Fantasia was my favorite for a long time. I still think she's a great singer, but I'm switching my vote to LaToya. As the weeks go by and we get to know them a little bit better, I think Fantasia is getting irritating, I agree her tributes sound lame and I thought bringing her daughter up on stage was practically cheating, playing on the sympathy/cutesy vote.
I'm going to have to quit watching Idol altogether though if one more person (are you listening, George?) thanks God or prayer for putting them on the American Idol Stage of Mass Commercialism. No wonder the Middle East is a mess, God is too busy calling the Fox phone lines.
I hear ya, boomcrashbaby, and as I've posted here before I'm not really that excited about any of these final five contestants :( I don't think I'd be interested in buying a CD from any of the remaining contestants.
It's not like the first two seasons where there was a whole lot of drama and expectation. Now there's pretty much only controversy.
Next year I wonder if Simon and Paula will be tonguing each other and we'll get a healthy diet of misfits like William Hung to try and maintain the ratings. I know a couple people who are only interested in the first few reject shows and stop watching it after that.
I sure hope American Idol doesn't turn into the Gong Show ... but it sure looks to be heading in that direction ...
One thing about Paula that I noticed nobody else mentioning is that ever since her arm was in a cast, she's been acting like she's really medicated. Has anybody else noticed that? There hasn't been a cast on her arm for awhile, but the glaze in her eyes is still there. She made a pretty funny comment the night Barry Manilow was on. She had said something like 'we should do a tribute to his music......uh, like tonight!'. Nobody remembers that?
Paula has always had that "I'm so happy I'm stoned" look to me, and it could be just her bubbly personality or it could be that in fact she's trimming the happy weed before showtime. Her makeup was utterly ghastly last night though. She looked like a clown. It's too bad because I think she is a pretty lady with natural beauty and doesn't need the makeup phoniness.
As a judge, though, I think her commentary is pretty much worthless. She's happy for everybody and rarely offers any worthwhile criticism. But then again, Simon is critical enough for all of them.
how can three be save, when there are only 5 people and 3 gotta be in the "bottom three"?
i also have the feeling jasmine will have to go, but i also could imagine george might drop out.
unfortunately i can't receive the show right now, i'll have to wait until in a few hours to download the show to get the results. :/
Semi-shocker - it's George. Catfight for the title.
Well who cares what any of you think. The best woman for the job has won. Fantasia is a wonderful, beautiful woman with an outstanding voice. Fantasia is a real woman, who had real struggles that many of you on this site never had to deal with. Everybody isn't born with silver spoons in their mouth. The fact that she bought her daughter on stage, just shows hey "I'm like you Americaa" (The vast amount of single moms)It was not a play of sympathy. You obviously don't know talent. How about you audition and see if you can even make it through an audition. L-O-S-E-R-S

Once again your pro-Fantasia bias shows. Everyone knows, as well you should too, that Fantasia should be grouped the losers. You just don't want to do it because you love Fantasia.
As far as John Stevens/Fantasia goes, did you see when Stevens was off? Fantasia gave him a big long hug. Perhaps she is looking for next person she can refer to as
"My baby's daddy." :-) lol just kidding.
Seriously, Stevens and Burrino were good friends in the house. Why wouldn't she mention him?
Again your BIAS shows when you think the props to Hudson (an obviously desperate attempt to get votes) was OK, but mentioning Stevens, a good friend
of hers, is not.
Nice job Scott. Thanks for your completely biased analysis. Say goodbye to Fantasia tonight buddy.
