Weather Underground

The Oscar nominated documentary Weather Underground airs tonight on many PBS stations and will be out on DVD May 26th. The DVD will have the unedited theatrical cut as well as commentaries and other material.

I first saw it at last year's San Francisco International Film Festival (where it won the award for best documentary which included an Apple FinalCut system) and a documentary showing at this year's festival, Guerrilla: the taking of Patty Hearst (which will air on American Experience on PBS next season) makes a good companion piece (some adventurous PBS programmers may present them as a double feature next year).

Both films provide a critical view of their subjects, particularly Todd Gitlin's comments in Weather Underground and from some of the WU and SLA members themselves (though Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn have a different view.
