Family Style - Vaughan Brothers
I heard a great segment on npr yesterday about The 100 Best Texas Songs. Melissa Block interviewed Texas Monthly writers Jeff McCord and John Morthland who, through various methods, came up with the list. Very interesting stuff. Their criteria:
- "Rather than limiting ourselves to songs that are about Texas, we defined a Texas song as any song performed by a Texas artist. Who qualified? Anyone who was born here, even if he or she left the state while still in diapers. As for the non-natives, they needed to have spent a good part of their career inside the state lines, and their songs had to be a product of their time here or related in some way to the state."
The interview inspired me to pull out Stevie Ray & Jimmie's very cool record. "Hillbillies From Outerspace" is a great way to start off a weekend.
Oh, here's the top 10 of the Texas 100:
- She's About A Mover - Sir Douglas Quintet
- New San Antonio Rose - Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys
- That'll Be the Day - Buddy Holly and the Crickets
- Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain - Willie Nelson
- Tighten Up - Archie Bell and the Drells
- I Fought the Law - Bobby Fuller Four
- Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground - Blind Willie Johnson
- Stormy Monday Blues - T-Bone Walker
- Las Nubes - Little Joe y la Familia
- Me and Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin
Now there's a pile of fun.
