The Duke De Mondo On "Shaun Of The Dead"

Folks by the name of Moriarty or KrullWarrior45 have chimed in about how this reminds them of An American Werewolf In Paris or Braindead, and certainly these comparisons are reasonably justified. Another flick sprung into The Duke's mind, though, and the flick in question was The Second Coming, about how Christopher Eccleston is the Son Of God. This might be hard to believe when you look at some of the films Eccleston has been in, but hey, there's almost thirty-odd years unaccounted for in the life of the original Jesus, so who knows, maybe he made some really shit films too, before he met up with Mad Max in the desert.

Anyway, the point is that The Second Coming, which was written by Russell T Davis who also penned the wonderful Queer As Folk for Channel 4, was all about really unbelievable shit going down in the old U of K, but because it had good characters and great dialogue and was very witty, it made it all seem oddly credible, even when you looked out the window and saw folks pissing up against taxis.

Anyway, what I think is that this deserves to be seen, and it's a damn blessing that it's got so much of the yacking thrown in its direction. Because I haven't saw a really good British film since Ewan Goes Trainspotting, and it gets to me man, I walk down the street I feel like I got Gangster Cliché-Hogging Cunt written across my shoulders.

Also, it's got the best usage of a Smiths song since The Best Of The Smiths - The Video Collection.

Thanks, Shaun Of The Dead, for getting my shoulders all nice and clean again. Could still do with a shave, though.

I've gone so cold turkey waiting for the next few chapters of your novel that I'm now reduced to trawling the web for Four Year Old essays. Anything for a fix!

But "Best usage of a Smiths song?" God! I missed THAT. Of course, my generation says "Best usage of a Queen song since...Live Aid 1985, yeah right?" Confess that you didn't get just a bit teary-eyed when Shaun kisses his loving wife Liz in their very upwardly mobile little London homeplace there with the Ikea style and all and tells her he's just gonna go out to the toolshed for a min and he does and that's when the camera cuts to [Interior Shot: Toolshed] Zombie Ed in chains ready to pick up the video game controls and join his buddy in whatever little run and shoot game they've been playing for these many years and the soundtrack bursts into "You're My Best Friend" by that very same Queen.

But I did miss the Smiths song. Good thing the New Year's gift of Netflix is delivering a copy of Shaun of the Dead sometime later this month. I'll pay attention for that one this time.
