The Duke De Mondo On "Shaun Of The Dead"

There seems to be an etiquette for reviewing this here film what has the people from Spaced fighting the zombies, a way of doing things. Just like no-one wanted to read your opinion on The Passion Of The Christ unless you explicitly pointed out your religious beliefs up to and including any involvement with the Hare Krishnas or the Muslims, and also said if you liked Mel Gibson's previous films, and if so, why, and was it because you're a Nazi motherfucker and so on.

Similarly, when you wax Shaun Vs The Zombies, folks wanna know what you thought of Spaced, and if you thought Dawn Of The Dead 2004 was any good, and if you laughed at Return Of The Living Dead, and what the fuck you were doing at that apartment last weekend. You were supposed to be sick, you lying bastard.

Anyway, personally speaking, I didn't care an awful lot for the Spaced, even though it made me feel very knowledgeable and well-informed, especially if I watched it with people who had never seen the Lucio Fulci's or THX-9000.

As a result, I had reservations about this here film. They were pretty major ones too, table for 16-sized reservations, if you wanna get all pedantic.

A while back a film came out by the name of Dog Soldiers, and everyone was harping on about this was just about the best film what ever had an English accent. You gotta see it, Duke, you just gotta! It's British, man, go see it!

Because The Duke himself is British, and so a good film about the werewolves with UK next to its title in IMDB meant I was supposed to feel vindicated, like all those years waiting to get a knee removed on an NHS waiting list were all worth it, because this right here was brilliant.

I thought it was shit though.

I was burned, man, I had a thousand-yard-stare coming out of that theatre where I downloaded the film from. And I didn't want this Pegg character burning my fragile torso any more. So I was coming over all Lycanthropic Militia with regards this Shaun carry-on.

The reason I tell you all this here is because of what is known to the educated as the "context". Context is what folks use when they wanna explain why The Tempest was repulsive from a post-colonialist perspective or something.

I've gone so cold turkey waiting for the next few chapters of your novel that I'm now reduced to trawling the web for Four Year Old essays. Anything for a fix!

But "Best usage of a Smiths song?" God! I missed THAT. Of course, my generation says "Best usage of a Queen song since...Live Aid 1985, yeah right?" Confess that you didn't get just a bit teary-eyed when Shaun kisses his loving wife Liz in their very upwardly mobile little London homeplace there with the Ikea style and all and tells her he's just gonna go out to the toolshed for a min and he does and that's when the camera cuts to [Interior Shot: Toolshed] Zombie Ed in chains ready to pick up the video game controls and join his buddy in whatever little run and shoot game they've been playing for these many years and the soundtrack bursts into "You're My Best Friend" by that very same Queen.

But I did miss the Smiths song. Good thing the New Year's gift of Netflix is delivering a copy of Shaun of the Dead sometime later this month. I'll pay attention for that one this time.
