Sports City: Detroit!
Published April 12, 2004
There are four major professional sports in the US: Basketball, Hockey, Football, and Baseball. Detroit looks like a Champion in two, and an interesting team in two more.
BASKETBALL:
The Detroit Pistons, with the new addition of Rasheed Wallace to their lineup, have been nothing less than dominating. They are widely expected to face top-seeded Indiana in the Eastern Conference Finals, and they are likely not the underdogs.
If they meet the Lakers in the NBA Finals, as I expect, it will be a tough series. Detroit's hard-core defense is capable of stifling Kobe, Shaq, Karl, and Gary. Close, low-scoring games means Detroit has an actual chance at winning this thing.
HOCKEY:
The Red Wings won the President's Cup this year. That means they have home-ice throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs.
They are presently up 2-1 in their first-round series. I do not expect them to crush all opponents, but at home they are nearly unbeatable. With home-ice advantage, they are surely the favorite to win the whole thing.
BASEBALL:
The hapless Tigers won their first four games, and are currently 5-1. The addition of "Pudge" Rodriguez has proved crucial.
They may not be playoff-caliber yet. But then again, they won't be setting any records for futility this season.
FOOTBALL:
The Detroit Lions have never been to a Super Bowl. This upcoming season will likely not change that historical fact.
But, with a great coach in Steve Mariucci, and a star QB, as well as some decent receivers, this team could well break the ".500" mark this season. It likely won't be pretty, but nine wins is not impossible. Wild Card, maybe? My fingers are crossed.
