What's wrong with speaking French?

Because Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry speaks French (which Republicans seem to view as a bad thing - I think speaking a second language is a very good thing), he has been accused of "looking French" and "agreeing with the French," and jokes about his French-language skills are common in conservative circles.

What I'd like to know is what exactly is wrong with speaking French? Yes, I know that most conservatives hate the French government for being against the war in Iraq, but does that mean that they have to hate every French person as well as every person who speaks French too?

It's not about even the French.

When it comes to language Education, the United States is far behind Europe. Most European counties expect you to speak the mother tongue as well as English AS WELL as another language. It is very common to be tri-lingual over there.

I speak English and German, though I understand German better than I can converse in it (need more technical and political vocabulary). My Dutch friend speaks Dutch, English, German, French, AND Italian.

Conservatives seem to be "anti-education" and "anti-science". I think its horrible that children here are not required at least one another language by third grade! I think it is also awful that more and more schools are dropping the other languages for Spanish. If anything, we need to make more Spanish living in the states learn ENGLISH.

I feel another blog coming on...

I tried learning French... But the teacher was Moroccan and more interested on hitting on the chicks in his class (was a community college). I have a good french friend... all I learned was how to say bad things about women I don't like.

Gen. George S. Patton spoke fluent French. So it can't be a bad thing.

Commie pinko republicans just want everyone to speak Russian.

Bien sur, if only the 'murrican apparatchiks could learn to speak the Mother Tongue, never mind challenging them with learning another language.

Ai ya, wo mun wan leh.

First of all I would like to say that the guy who said that the "pinko commie Republicans" want us all to speak Russian is an idiot. Communism is far left ideology, while the Republicans lean toward the right. If anything they would want us to learn to speak German. Kerry's French is a product of his being raised and educated in the upper-class, liberal Northeast. French is the preferred language of study for many in that region because of its snob value and association with High European Culture. It is merely a product of geography, not a refelction of Kerry's political views. Nonetheless, it was naive of him to think that France and Germany would line up behind him in the war on terror. As a speaker of German myself, "Ich freue mich, dass Präsident Bush hat die Wahl gewonnen."

Of course the French (language) bashers don't seem to know that a very substantial part of the English/American language (> 50 %) consist of French words, or corruptions theroef: money = monnaye, power = pouvoir, manage = ménager, dinner = diner, military = militaire, surprise, due = dű, enterprise (from entreprendre), veal = veau, etc. If they are faithful to their principles they should unly use [French root!] Anglo-Saxon words.
Another emnmbarrasment for the predominantly protestant French bashers: the founder of calvinist protestantism was a Frenchman (Jean Cauvin) !!!!

Because conservatives don't realize how they are exposing themselves for the bigots that they really are. Think about, could you ever say it was wrong to vote for a jewish candidate because he looked to jewish? Or a black candidate because he is to black? Consevatives are the ememy of everyone french, including french-americans.
